Four special editions have been added to the Mitsubishi ASX range, bringing the total variant count to 10.

  • Prices start from $23,990 before on-road costs for the base ES manual

The 2021 Mitsubishi ASX range has been expanded with the addition of four limited-edition variants.

Intended to help navigate COVID- and semiconductor shortage-related supply constraints, the ES-L, ES Plus, MR Plus and XLS Plus versions of Mitsubishi's strong-selling ASX small SUV are available to order now, and bundle in a selection of customer-favourite features to target private buyers.

In a statement, the senior manager of product strategy Mitsubishi Motors Australia, Owen Thomson, said: "We are always looking for ways to optimise the range through spec and grade variants. If you look at the [2022 Model Year] Triton, we dropped some manuals and made ADAS standard on the base spec.

"Over the past year we’ve worked with our dealers to understand the challenges they have with supply constraints, largely related to COVID but now compounded with the semi-conductor challenges, and also what key features customers want to see. We aren’t changing our core range – if you’ve always been a customer that drives, for example, an Outlander Exceed, then you can still order your Outlander Exceed.

"But we’ve been working together with our product team in Japan to create some special edition models.  We’re testing some of our thinking on range optimisation, and these special editions are available now."

While a full list of the standard equipment offered with each ASX variant is listed at the bottom of this story – along with a price list, before on-road costs – we'll go through the key additions with each special-edition here.

The most affordable of the special editions, the ES-L, sits above the entry-level ES in the ASX range, priced from $27,640 before on-road costs – a $1400 premium over the ES equipped with an automatic transmission.

Additional features over the ES include LED fog lights, lane-departure warning, rear parking sensors, rain-sensing wipers, dusk-sensing (automatic) headlights, auto-high beam, turn indicators in the mirrors, and chrome side body trim.

Further up the range sits the ES Plus, priced from $28,590 before on-road costs with a standard-fit automatic transmission. Based on the entry-level ES, the ES Plus gains the roster of features added by the ES-L, plus privacy glass, keyless entry and push-button start.

The ES ADAS that formerly sat above the base ES is no longer listed in Mitsubishi's online configurator, indicating it has been deleted.

Based on the mid-spec, sport-themed MR model – itself sitting above the base ES, rather than the new ES-L and ES Plus grades – is a new MR Plus variant, priced from $30,640 before on-road costs.

It adds paddle shifters, a six-speaker sound system, suede/synthetic leather upholstery with red stitching, synthetic leather door inserts, indicators in the side mirrors, automatic headlights, auto high-beam, lane-departure warning, rain-sensing wipers, a black rear spoiler and a silver power window switch panel.

The MR's keyless entry, push-button start, black exterior trim and 18-inch wheels, rear parking sensors and leather-wrapped handbrake lever are all carried over to the MR Plus.

The MR Plus also picks up the larger 2.4-litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine featured on higher LS, GSR, XLS Plus and Exceed grades, sending 123kW and 222Nm to the front wheels through a CVT automatic transmission.

Meanwhile, cheaper ES, ES-L, ES Plus and MR models feature a 110kW/197Nm 2.0-litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine, paired to a CVT automatic transmission in most grades, or a five-speed manual as standard in the base ES (with the CVT a $2250 extra on this variant).

Priced from $33,140 before on-road costs, the new XLS Plus grade is based on the aforementioned limited-edition ES Plus, and adds the 2.4-litre petrol engine, two-tone 18-inch wheels, satellite navigation, leather trim, electric driver's seat, heated front seats, a metallic front grille, chrome window trim, auto-levelling headlights, and a panoramic sunroof with mood lighting.

All four 2021 Mitsubishi ASX special editions are on sale now.
