2021 Genesis G70 Shooting Brake wagon to miss out on twin-turbo V6 – report

Genesis' maiden wagon to stick to four-cylinder power, according to new reports, with the sedan's powerful V6 not in keeping with the Shooting Brake's European focus.

The upcoming 2021 Genesis G70 Shooting Brake wagon won't offer the potent 3.3-litre twin-turbocharged V6 featured in its sedan sibling, new overseas reports suggest.

Online publication The Korean Car Blog reports the G70 wagon will be offered solely with a choice of 185kW/353Nm 2.0-litre turbo-petrol and 149kW/441Nm 2.2-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engines, with the Genesis sedan's 274kW/510Nm 3.3-litre twin-turbo V6 not set to be an option on the long-roof.

It's thought the wagon’s focus on the European market will be behind the decision, as despite the Continent's penchant for performance wagons (namely those from Germany's big three), its strict emissions rules and efficiency-focused taxation systems stymie hope for a large-displacement version of an already low-volume vehicle.

While Australia lacks such emissions regulations – instead offering open country roads and one of the world's more performance-hungry new-car markets – it's highly likely the V6 will be off the table Down Under as well, given the US nor South Korea will offer the vehicle – both prime markets for a potent V6 flagship.

While Genesis' Australian arm couldn't confirm the wagon's local engine line-up – the brand keeping its cards close to its chest until the wagon's local launch later this year – it's expected the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine (in a 179kW state of tune) will represent the only option in Australia, given low demand for diesel sedans and wagons locally.

It would also be plausible to see all-wheel drive offered as the only drivetrain layout in the wagon, given the launch vehicle (above) and recent test prototypes spotted by The Korean Car Blog all wear '4WD' badges. That would be a departure from its sedan sibling, which is rear-wheel-drive-only in Australia, with all-wheel drive available as an option overseas.

Revealed last month, the G70 wagon represents the Korean luxury brand's first-ever wagon, targeted at European customers by pairing the underpinnings, front-end styling and interior of the G70 sedan with a longer roof claimed to provide a 40 per cent increase in boot capacity.

It's expected the 3.3-litre twin-turbo V6 will be officially ruled out from the 2021 Genesis G70 wagon in the coming weeks, once Genesis' European division officially details its engine range.

The wagon will go on sale in Australia in the third quarter of 2021 (July to September inclusive), following its sedan sibling into showrooms, due later this month.
