Ford readying twin-turbo Godzilla engine – report

Ford could be readying a twin-turbocharged variation on its largest capacity V8 engine ever, the 7.3-litre 'Godzilla' V8.

Ford is reportedly working on a force-inducted version of its massive 7.3-litre 'Godzilla' V8 engine which would likely be sold as a crate motor.

According to sources close to development, Ford Authority reports the pushrod powerplant will offer a twin-turbocharged variant and is currently being tested in at least two Ford Super Duty pick-up trucks.

Though there were no spy photos to report on, Ford Authority suggests that the prototypes have extra heat shielding around the bonnet and use a modified bonnet treatment.

No power outputs are disclosed, though sources describe the twin-turbocharged engine as a “monster”. Like its naturally-aspirated counterpart, the twin-turbo Godzilla engine will likely be sold as a crate motor if it reaches production.

The regular 7.3-litre Godzilla naturally-aspirated pushrod V8 engine was introduced for the 2020 model year in Ford’s Super Duty utility vehicle. Its 320kW/644Nm outputs mightn’t sound like much for such a high-capacity V8, though consider the application in Ford’s Super Duty pick-up trucks, where reliability and longevity are paramount.

To put this engine’s development in context, some aftermarket tuners have eeked out 757kW by supercharging the engine, while another outfit, Merkel Racing Engines, twin-turbocharged a Godzilla to the tune of 830kW.

Blue Oval diehards will no doubt be excited over the possibilities of a twin-turbo Godzilla V8, though we’ll have to wait for Ford’s official announcement before getting too excited.
