2022 BMW M4 Convertible revealed, Australian launch due late 2021 – UPDATE

BMW's hottest mid-size car loses its roof, with a 375kW turbo six under the bonnet sending drive to all four wheels.

UPDATE, 26 May 2021, 2pm: The 2022 BMW M4 Competition Convertible with M xDrive will arrive in Australia in the fourth quarter of 2021 (October to December inclusive), the brand has confirmed.

Pricing and specifications will be announced closer to launch.

Our original story continues below.

26 May 2021, 9:30am: The 2022 BMW M4 Convertible has been unveiled.

Officially known as the BMW M4 Competition Convertible with M xDrive, the drop-top sports car completes the new-generation M4 family, until the arrival of CS and CSL coupe variants later down the road.

As its name suggests, just one engine, gearbox and drivetrain option will be offered with the new model, which brings all-weather, all-wheel-drive capability to the M4 Convertible for the first time.

The new M3/M4 family’s 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged inline-six sits under the bonnet in full-fat 375kW/650Nm Competition trim, paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

It’s fed through the same M xDrive all-wheel drive system as the M4 Competition xDrive coupe, with the same switchable 4WD, 4WD Sport and 2WD modes.

A manual transmission isn’t available, nor is the regular 353kW engine tune, or a pure rear-wheel-drive layout.

BMW claims a 3.7-second 0-100km/h sprint – down 0.2 seconds over the equivalent coupe – towards an electronically-limited top speed of 250km/h in standard form, or 280km/h with the M Driver’s Package equipped.

The Convertible benefits from the same array of chassis smarts as its range-mates, including adaptive dampers, 19-inch front and 20-inch rear forged alloy wheels, a selection of customisable drive modes, variable steering, M Drift Analyser program, and more.

Stopping power comes from 380mm six-piston front and 370mm single-piston rear brakes in standard guise, while 400mm front and 380mm rear carbon-ceramic discs available as an option.

A front subframe shear panel, rigid rear axle subframe mounts and Convertible-specific rear torsion struts all improve body stiffness. Unique front and rear suspension geometry also feature, along with a new steering ratio.

Differentiating the Convertible from its coupe siblings is its folding roof, which swaps its predecessor's metal construction for fabric, cutting 40 per cent off its weight, and liberating an additional 80 litres of boot space.

The soft-top can be opened or closed electronically in 18 seconds at speeds up to 50km/h.

The M4 Convertible's styling combines the regular 4 Series Convertible's profile with the aggressive design elements of the M3 sedan and M4 coupe, with tall kidney grilles up front, sporty front and rear bumpers, side skirts, an M-specific diffuser, and quad exhaust tips.

The drop-top lacks the coupe's black rear lip spoiler, owing to the placement of the third brake light in the boot lid.

The 2022 BMW M4 Competition Convertible xDrive will enter production in July 2021.

An Australian launch will occur in the fourth quarter of 2021.
