Toyota Prius V axed internationally

The seven-seater will be indirectly replaced in the line-up by the upcoming Toyota Kluger hybrid SUV.

The Toyota Prius V hybrid – a large seven-seat variation of the standard Prius hatchback – is set to be axed, a spokesperson for the Japanese brand in Australia confirmed.

Toyota Australia will discontinue selling the Prius V in Australia from 31 August 2021,” the spokesperson told Drive.

“This decision was made as a result of a small and declining customer demand for vehicles in the small wagon segment – orders are no longer being taken for the Prius V in Australia, with remaining stock to be supplied to fill existing customer orders until August 31."

“Toyota remains committed to maintaining the Prius nameplate in Australia, with the Prius hatch continuing as part of Toyota’s popular hybrid range,” the spokesperson continued.

Priced from $37,590 before on-road costs in Australia, power in the Prius V comes from a 1.8-litre four-cylinder petrol engine paired with a closed-loop hybrid system. This sends 73kW/142Nm to the front wheels via a continuously variable transmission.

Of the 54,355 hybrid vehicles Toyota has so far reported as sold in 2021, just 63 wore a Prius V badge. The other 54,292 hybrids were sold across the Yaris, Yaris Cross, C-HR, Corolla, RAV4 and Camry nameplates.

The Prius V will be indirectly replaced in the Toyota line-up by the upcoming 2021 Kluger hybrid SUV, set to arrive in local showrooms in June priced from $47,650 before on-road costs.

The original Prius will become the sole remaining member of the Prius family in Australia, following the discontinuation of the Prius C city car in 2020 to make way for the new Yaris Hybrid hatch.
