Australia’s first wrecked Porsche Taycan? $200k electric car crashes in Melbourne

The electric Porsche Taycan has taken on an electric tram along Melbourne's St Kilda Road – and lost.

A 2021 Porsche Taycan 4S has wrecked on Melbourne's iconic St Kilda Road boulevard, less than three months after it was first registered.

It's understood the electric Taycan attempted to make a u-turn in front of an electric tram near the Toorak Road junction, causing significant damage to the Porsche.

While the battery-powered Taycan weighs around 2245kg unladen, a Melbourne tram can weigh up to 50,000kg.

A number of people have crashed the high-powered Porsche sedan since its release in 2020, but it's believed this is the first Taycan to be involved in a serious accident on Australian shores.

In February 2021, a Russian YouTube star drove a brand-new Porsche Taycan through a dealership window in an effort to drum-up views on the video platform.

The entry-level Taycan 4S comes with a 79.2kWh Performance Battery pack putting out 320kW/640Nm, with up to 390kW available on 'overboost' and a total range of 365km.

Buyers can also option a Performance Plus Battery, offering 360kW and 650Nm from a 93.4kWh, and a range of 414km.

While the Taycan topped the sales chart in March 2021 for the Large Cars over $70,000 segment – the first for any electric vehicle – it fell to third behind the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and BMW 5 Series in the following month.
