2022 Ford Everest spy photos: New model caught on camera testing in Australia

The locally-developed 2022 Ford Everest has been spotted on Australian roads undergoing final validation testing.

The 2022 Ford Everest four-wheel-drive is in the final stages of testing before it is due to arrive in Australian showrooms early next year.

An eagle-eyed CarAdvice reader sent us photos of a camouflaged version of the 2022 Ford Everest being driven on the streets of metropolitan Melbourne.

Despite the vehicle being cloaked in disguise, the photos show the 2022 Ford Everest will adopt a front-end appearance and C-shaped headlight clusters inspired by the Ford F-Series pick-up in the US, to give it a bolder appearance.

The tailgate and tail-lights have also been redesigned and, although the external sheetmetal is new, much of the 2022 Ford Everest’s core body structure is believed to be carried over from today’s model, with one key exception.

The 2022 Ford Everest is expected to adopt the same longer dash-to-front-axle ratio as the 2022 Ford Ranger ute, primarily to accomodate the option of a turbo diesel V6.

CarAdvice understands the 2022 Ford Everest will drop the ageing 3.2-litre turbo-diesel five-cylinder and will instead switch to the twin-turbo 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel as the standard engine, and have a turbo-diesel 3.0-litre V6 as an option for flagship variants.

The new-generation Ford Everest has also been developed to adopt hybrid technology, however this option is not expected to be available in Australia initially, and could follow at a later date.

The photos show Ford has clearly pivoted to a more road-focused alternative for the new Everest line-up, with low-profile road-biased tyres designed to better handle the daily grind rather than off-road tracks.

As with the 2022 Ford Ranger ute, the 2022 Ford Everest is expected to offer more model choices, with many of those skewed towards on-road driving dynamics.

Since the Ford Endura SUV was axed from the local line-up, the 2022 Ford Everest will need to fill the void of a car-derived large SUV.

That role was previously filled by the homegrown Ford Territory (pictured below just prior to the end of local manufacturing), which offered car-like handling in a seven-seat SUV package.

However, it is more challenging to engineer a body-on-frame vehicle such as the Ford Everest to handle and corner like a car.

It appears Ford is going to give it a red hot go, however, with the photos showing the aforementioned low-profile road-biased tyres.

CarAdvice understands the Sport variant of the current-generation Ford Everest (pictured below) has become the most popular model in the Everest line-up, and Ford wants to capitalise on that appeal.

Prices and specifications for the 2022 Ford Everest are due to be released later this year. CarAdvice will bring any further updates and they come to hand.

However, as with most new vehicles, the next-generation Ford Everest is expected to come with a full suite of advanced safety, and step up its in-car technology, with widescreen digital dash displays and large tablet-style infotainment screens available on top models.
