2022 Ford Ranger Raptor to get twin-turbo V6 petrol in the US, Australia could get turbo diesel V6

A report out of the US has repeated earlier claims the 2022 Ford Ranger Raptor will have twin turbo V6 petrol power. Will Australia get this engine, or the turbo diesel V6 from the F-150?

There has been further speculation the 2022 Ford Ranger Raptor will be powered by a twin-turbo petrol V6 borrowed from the high-performance Ford Explorer ST and paired to a 10-speed auto.

The latest report comes via enthusiast website Ford Authority, which claims to have based the information on sources familiar with the next-generation Ford Ranger.

However, it remains unclear if the twin-turbo petrol V6 engine is for the US market only, which favours petrol over diesel for compact pick-ups.

It’s possible Ford Ranger Raptor utes sold in Australia could have turbo diesel V6 power, given the dominance of diesel in this region.

Complicating the choice of petrol or diesel V6 power for the Ford Ranger Raptor: developing two engines for one global model would come at considerable engineering expense.

Car companies tend not to double-up on such options for niche models. That said, Ford did develop petrol and diesel versions of the Focus ST hot hatch, so there is precedent.

CarAdvice understands the current-generation Ford Ranger Raptor has exceeded the company’s sales expectations and, given the high price and generous profit margins, a business case could be made for a turbo diesel V6 for models sold in Australia.

There is widespread speculation the next generation Ford Ranger will have the option of turbo diesel V6 power on certain high-grade variants, including Raptor.

There is also a slim chance Australia could offer a choice of both petrol or diesel turbo V6 power for the next Raptor, however Ford would likely be reluctant to add such complexity to its production lines and showrooms.

In the US, the twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine (borrowed from the Ford Explorer ST, below) reportedly slated for the Ford Ranger Raptor pumps out approximately 300kW and 560Nm in its current guise, leaving a gap to the Ford F-150 Raptor's twin-turbo 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine with 335kW and 690Nm.

A V8 version of the new Ford F-150 Raptor in the US – rumoured to be supercharged, to compete with the supercharged V8-powered Ram 1500 TRX – has been confirmed for a 2022 launch.

Meanwhile details on the 2022 Ford Ranger line-up remain scarce, even as camouflaged prototypes continue to be caught on camera testing in Australia and the US.

CarAdvice believes the next-generation Ford Ranger will be unveiled later this year, before arriving in local showrooms in early 2022.
