Ford’s last-ever modern Falcon GT changes hands for a rumoured $1 million

The last Falcon GT built has a new owner, with the unique 'Victory Gold' FPV reportedly selling for a near-record sum.

EXCLUSIVE

The last Falcon GT built by Ford Performance Vehicles has found a new home, with rumours suggesting the vehicle has sold privately for around $1 million.

Ford auctioned the last 500 local build allocations of the FPV GT F back in 2014, raising nearly $400,000 for the National Breast Cancer Foundation at the time.

Of that, $236,100 came from the auction of Australian build number 500. The winner, Steven Clarke, spent more than three times the car's list price for the privilege of being the first owner the last-ever Falcon GT.

"Ford invited me down to Geelong and said 'you can either sit and watch the engine being built, or you can help build it'," Mr Clarke told CarAdvice.

"I installed the cams and other bits. I also went to Broadmeadows and put the stripe on the boot and put together the grille, fitted the 500 build badge, and different things like that."

With his initials stamped on the engine, the last GT was driven off the production line by Mr Clarke on 8 October 2014, uniquely painted in 'Victory Gold' as an homage to the first 1967 Ford Falcon GT.

Prior to going through the paint shop, the vehicle's body was signed by the FPV production team. The only way to see the signatures is to X-ray the car.

While Mr Clarke wouldn't disclose the sum paid for the car, it's believed he had previously discussed a $1 million reserve with a handful of auction houses. Before going ahead with the auction however, a friend put him in touch with an interested party and an agreement was made.

"People thought I was crazy for spending [$236,100] on the car back then," Mr Clarke said about his 2014 purchase.

Insiders have told CarAdvice the new owner also owns the 'last' Holden Commodore SS, which sold at auction in January 2021 for $750,000. It's understood the collector has a number of locally-made cars with similar historical provenance.

The ultimate GT F from Ford Performance Vehicles was fitted with a 5.0-litre 'Boss 351' supercharged V8 producing 351kW and 570Nm, sent to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual. A total of 550 GT F models were made (with 50 going to NZ), and were the most powerful Falcon GTs ever sold.

The last GT F built – with F denoting 'final edition' – featured a number of unique touches, including having special attention given to the panels and paintwork, as well as a one-off supercharger plenum design.

A second 'Victory Gold' body was also painted at the same time to ensure identical spare panels were available for #500, with Ford providing the panels to Mr Clarke before having the shell crushed.

Though the exact figure paid for the gold GT remains unconfirmed, if the rumours are true, it wasn't far off the highest price ever recorded for a Falcon: $1.15 million paid for a 1971 Ford Falcon XY GT-HO Phase III in February 2021.
