Audi to develop next Porsche Cayenne platform

Last week, Volkswagen Group announced its plans for the roles of each of its most popular brands, Porsche, Volkswagen and Audi. Audi has now been selected to provide the SUV platforms for cars like the Porsche Cayenne.

Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn said Porsche will be in charge of providing a platform for all of the upcoming sports cars to come out of Volkswagen Group, while Audi will be providing the basis for all the sedans that are based on the Audi A4 and A5. This left Volkswagen to stick to what it does best; making the Volkswagen Golf and its derivatives.

Audi now has another job: developing the underpinnings for the future generation Porsche Cayenne. A Porsche representative said in a recent report,

"This is not badge engineering. Porsche will be responsible for the engines and performance of the next Cayenne. It will drive like a Porsche and perform like a Porsche."

The spokesman also said the decision was made on a group basis and one that all three agreed on mutually. The companies agreed using uniform platforms will build all the brands and still provide for the customers.

Audi will develop the basis for the Audi Q7 which will also be shared by the upcoming Volkswagen Touareg and the Porsche Cayenne. Audi will also develop the platform for the upcoming mini SUVs from each brand, namely, the Porsche Cajun, which will share the same platform as the Audi Q5.
