2022 Subaru BRZ: First Australian deliveries due late 2021, registrations of interest now open – UPDATE: Here in December

Subaru's second-generation sports coupe will arrive locally between October and December, though prices have yet to be announced.

UPDATE, 1 June 2021: Subaru Australia is aiming to begin deliveries of the BRZ sports car in December of this year, a spokesperson for the brand has confirmed to CarAdvice.

3 May 2021: The 2022 Subaru BRZ will launch in Australia in the fourth quarter of 2021 (October to December inclusive), with customers interested in the new sports car now able to register their interest.

A new page on Subaru Australia's website allows interested buyers to register their interest for the new BRZ – including an option to express interest in pre-ordering the new Subaru vehicle – ahead of first local deliveries in the fourth quarter of the year, pending no further delays related to COVID-19 or the semiconductor shortage.

Full local pricing and specifications will be announced closer to launch, however expect a moderate price rise over the outgoing model's $38,520 drive-away sticker to justify the new car's additional power, larger engine, stiffer chassis and updated technology.

Buyers keen to skip the price jump will need to get in quick, with the brand's local arm reporting just 50 new examples of the first-generation BRZ remain in the hands of the Subaru Australia dealer network.

"We only have around 50 of the current generation BRZ left, and it's likely there will be a gap in supply until the new model launches. So, it's timely to alert customers that the new model is coming, and to register their interest if they're keen to be among the first in line when deliveries begin," said Blair Read, Subaru Australia general manager.

"We've been staggered by the amount of interest in [the] new BRZ. The level of dealer enquiry and calls to our own customer service centre indicates massive interest among sports car fans and we look forward to sharing more details closer to launch."

Unveiled for the US in November 2020, and debuted in right-hand-drive guise for Japan in April 2021, the new BRZ is powered by a 2.4-litre naturally-aspirated 'boxer' four-cylinder engine developing 173kW and 250Nm – healthy gains over the outgoing model's 2.0-litre engine, which developed 152kW and 212Nm in its most potent guise.

Increases in torsional stiffness and front lateral bending rigidity of 50 per cent and 60 per cent respectively aim to sharpen handling, while a 7.0-inch digital instrument display and a selection of active safety systems (including autonomous emergency braking) feature for the first time – though the latter is exclusive to six-speed automatic models only.

Stay tuned to CarAdvice for more details on the 2022 Subaru BRZ, as its local launch between October and December 2021 approaches.
