MG Cyberster: Electric sports car concept confirmed for production, Australian delivery on the cards

According to MG, the two-seater will complete the 0-100km/h sprint in less than three seconds ... and it could be coming to Australia.

The MG Cyberster electric sports car – which was unveiled as a concept earlier this month at the Shanghai motor show – will go into production for both left- and right-hand drive markets, a spokesperson for the Chinese manufacturer in Australia has confirmed to Drive.

Further, the spokesperson suggested the two-seater could be offered locally: "As part of our Electric For Everyone strategy, MG Australia will now examine the Cyberster's potential for the Australian and New Zealand markets."

Official specifications are yet to be confirmed, however MG previously claimed the Cyberster would – in concept guise – complete the 0-100km/h benchmark sprint in “less than three seconds.” A range in excess of 800km was also suggested at launch.

Don’t expect the sports car to reach production unchanged however, with modifications needed to its exterior lighting, alloy wheels, interior and more to make it road-legal. Regardless, the spirit of the original concept will likely carry over into what buyers will see in showrooms.

Pricing is also unclear for now, and it remains to be seen if the Cyberster will be pitched as a zero-emission alternative to the Mazda MX-5, or more expensive machinery like the Porsche 911.

This story will be updated when more information becomes available.
