2021 Drive Car of the Year – Best Electric Car

This segment didn’t even exist on the motoring landscape not that long ago, and now it’s growing seemingly by the month.

Drive Car of the Year 2021 - Best Electric Car

Finalists:

Overall sales numbers are still small of course, but the electric vehicle segment is one that will become more important to Australian consumers very quickly over the next few years. Tesla is a mainstay, being the brand that effectively kicked this segment properly into the mainstream, but every manufacturer is now rushing to take its place in this vital part of the market.

The judges had their work cut out simply narrowing the award down to three finalists. With so many quality options now on the market, the months of testing leading into final DCOTY testing whittled the field down to the best three in terms of overall packages and value.

Tesla’s Model 3 continues to set the standard in terms of range and functionality, not to mention the brand’s excellent public charging network. Audi’s e-Tron is the newest kid on the block and offers everything you’d expect from the German brand, with a very modern drivetrain. And, much has been made of Australia’s most affordable electric vehicle, the MG ZS EV, a worthy finalist given its sharp value equation and standard features list.

And the Winner is...

Audi E-Tron

This is not what you expect an electric car to be. The Audi E-Tron is the future of electric driving, today.

Much is made of range when the discussion turns to electric vehicles, but there is a lot more to the argument than simply how far the vehicle will travel on a full charge. Build quality, efficiency in terms of energy use, standard features and entry price are all just as important in this segment as they are in any other.

For instance, a 500km theoretical range might get a ‘one-car family’ buyer over the line but won’t matter so much to the buyer looking for a second car that serves as a city run around. Further muddying the current electric car waters, is the fact we have small hatches slugging it out with medium and large SUVs, sedans and mid-sized crossovers in terms of the platforms used.

The judges could come up with an argument supporting each of our three finalists, depending on the buyer profile and what that buyer would want from their electric vehicle. There can, however, be only one winner and the best all-rounder is the Audi e-Tron.
