Porsche restoration challenge sees 40 classic Porsches revived to their former glory

In stark contrast to some other manufacturers, Porsche still holds a special place in its heart for its back catalogue of classic cars.

That’s why it’s announced a new competition held among its United States dealership network to see which workshop will win the 2021 Porsche Classic Restoration Challenge.

The competition will see Porsche Classic-certified dealerships take part by acquiring a classic Porsche and treating it to some tender loving care. Porsche says entries run the full gamut of Porsche’s history from the 1950s to the 2000s, from 55kW to 456kW, and from front- to mid- to rear-engined examples.

America is home to more classic Porsches than any other nation. After spending decades on the road, Porsche is prompting its workshops to get involved and lend some expert technical know-how in order for these special cars to continue on for many more enjoyable miles.

A swathe of 40 cars and 40 competing centres have already been selected, with entries ranging from multiple Porsche 356 models, five generations of 911, front-engined models like the 944 and 928 and even the first-generation Boxster. Rarities also include a 1989 Porsche 911 Speedster and the youngest car entered – the 2005 Porsche Carrera GT.

Each will undergo a full restoration at the hands of Porsche technicians who will have a 60,000-strong parts portfolio at their disposal.

The Porsche Classic Restoration Challenge will run until mid-August when one winner each will be crowned in three areas of the United States: East, South-Central and West. These three cars will then move onto the next round where the overall winner will be decided in September.

Entries will be judged by a panel of Porsche Cars North America experts which will look at criteria including engine, suspension, interior and also, accompanying documentation – much like a regular concours event.
