2021 Volkswagen Talagon unveiled in China as brand’s biggest SUV yet

The imposing seven-seater measures 5152mm from nose to tail.

The 2021 Volkswagen Talagon – which is believed to be the brand's largest ever SUV – was unveiled earlier this week at the 2021 Shanghai motor show.

Underpinned by the VW Group's versatile 'MQB' platform, the imposing seven-seater reportedly measures 5152mm from nose to tail. It is 2002mm wide and stands 1795mm tall, giving it similar overall proportions to the  Mercedes-Benz GLS, BMW X7Land Rover Discovery, or Lexus LX570.

According to local Chinese media, the standard variant gets a 2.5-litre V6 powertrain producing “roughly 220kW and 500Nm.” Drive is sent to all four wheels via a dual-clutch automatic transmission.

The vehicle was developed as part of a joint venture with Chinese manufacturing conglomerate FAW Group, which currently builds Besturn, Hongqi, and Oley cars for the domestic market.

However, despite potentially widespread demand internationally, it appears unlikely the 2021 Volkswagen Talagon will be sold outside China anytime soon.

A spokesperson for the brand in Australia told CarAdvice: "While we remain very interested in an even larger SUV, the current lack of right-hand-drive options appears to preclude this particular variant from the local market."
