Porsche 911 creator to celebrate 75th birthday tomorrow

It's so cool and interesting that the surname 'Porsche' is still attached to a man working for the famous automotive company, almost 80 years later. Dr Ferdinand Alexander Porsche is the grandson of the founder of the company and will celebrate his 75th birthday tomorrow.

Not only does he carry to famous last name and is the grandson of 'the' Ferdinand Porsche and son of Ferry Porsche, Dr Ferdinand Alexander also came up with the iconic Porsche 911 shape and perpetuated it through the 1960s and into the 1970s, heading the team of design at the company from 1962 until 1972.

Dr Porsche took his dad's (Ferry) design and wishes to develop a successor to the 356 (a Ferry Porsche design) to come up with the 911. It has since been one of the most successful sports cars throughout the 20th and 21st century.

He was destined to be an engineer for the company in the early years but he liked dealing with the design rather than the mechanics of cars. He says he is more of a technically talented craftsman in design. He sure is, that same iconic 911 shape is still around today.

The Doctor also came up with the design of the original Porsche Carrera GTS, the 904 (pictured).  The car went on to be highly successful at Sebring, Le Mans, Nurburgring and the famous Targa Florio races of the 1960s, sporting a robust four-cylinder engine.

Dr Ferdinand Alexander Porsche is retired now but spent his last working days heading the Porsche Design privately-owned company. He is currently the honorary chairman of the supervisory board of Porsche AG - the company that actually manufactures Porsche cars.

Happy birthday Dr F.A. Porsche and thanks for the years of Porsche development and design, and the 911.
