Geely Xingyue transforms Volvo’s CMA platform into Chinese large SUV flagship

Volvo’s parent company Geely unveiled the new Xingyue L large SUV flagship overnight at the 2021 Shanghai motor show.

The 2021 Geely Xingyue L has been revealed at the 2021 Shanghai motor show.

The five-seat large SUV is built upon Geely's (and subsidiary Volvo’s) shared Compact Modular Architecture, which also underpins the Volvo XC40 small SUV and sits below Geely’s current model line-up.

It appears Geely has also borrowed the “Expanding Cosmos” front grille from Volvo sub-brand Polestar, which is flanked by a set of new LED matrix headlights allowing for customisable lighting effects.

The high roofline provides an expansive greenhouse, while extensive chrome trim features along the side profiled  toward the rear end.

At the rear, the Xingyue L scores a vented bumper and sculpted tailgate that features a full-width light bar adjoining the two LED taillights – which, to some eyes, bears a passing resemblance to the Audi Q8 luxury SUV.

Inside, vehicle occupants will find a digital instrument cluster and a separate widescreen infotainment system, said to measure one metre long from end to end.

The rest of the interior is covered in two-tone upholstery with suede accenting. A 72-colour ambient lighting system and double-layered soundproofing enhances cabin ambience, while a 10-speaker Bose sound system is also available.

Power is supplied by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine available in two tunes: a 160kW/325Nm output and a 175kW/380Nm output. Drive is sent to an all-wheel-drive system through either Geely’s in-house seven-speed wet dual-clutch automatic or Aisin’s eight-speed torque-converter automatic transmission.

Geely says the Xingyue L will be capable of Level 2 semi-autonomous driving and will include an “unmanned automated valet system”, the latter enabling the owner to exit the car and send it off to find its own parking spot. Later, the car can be called upon to remove itself from the space and come pick you up, as long as you’re within a 200-metre radius.

The 2021 Geely Xingyue L will launch locally in China within weeks, and the company says there are plans to offer the model globally in the future.
