Huawei unveils its first car: The 2021 Seres SF5

Huawei has launched its first car, marketed as part of a collaboration with auto brand Seres – offering more than 1000km of range and a sub-five-second 0-100km/h time.

Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei has unveiled its first car.

Huawei pulled the wraps off a partnership with automotive brand Seres at the 2021 Shanghai motor show, with its first car, the freshly-updated Seres SF5, to be sold and marketed by Huawei throughout its stores in China.

A joint development between Huawei and Seres, the range-topping SF5's two electric motors develop 405kW and 820Nm, with a 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine acting as a range-extending generator.

The Huawei-marketed car is said to have an electric-only range of up to 180km, though it can travel more than 1000km on the NEDC test thanks to the range-extender engine.

The company also claims the SF5 can hit 100km/h from a standstill in 4.7 seconds – roughly on par with the fully-electric Ford Mustang Mach-E Premium AWD.

As you might expect, Huawei has created an infotainment system designed to seamlessly connect with a smartphone, as well as integrating voice control with the car – though there's no mention of Apple CarPlay being available.

The Seres SF5 also offers Level Two semi-autonomous driving, with adaptive cruise control, active steering assistance technology, and road congestion assistance.

"This exciting announcement sets a precedent for both the consumer electronics industry and the new energy vehicle industry,” said Huawei Consumer Business Group CEO Richard Yu.

"In the future, we will not only provide leading smart car solutions to help partners build better intelligent vehicles, but also help them sell those vehicles through our retail network across China."

The 2021 Seres SF5 will be sold through Huawei stores located in China from today from ¥216,800 (AU$43,200).
