2022 Genesis Electrified G80 revealed: Electric sedan due in Australia early 2022

Genesis' G80 large sedan goes electric, with a 500km zero-emissions range, ultra-fast charging and familiar styling.

The 2022 Genesis Electrified G80 has been officially revealed, ahead of an Australian launch in early 2022.

Unveiled at the 2021 Shanghai motor show opening this week, the Electrified G80 beats the much-rumoured GV60 to its public debut by several months to become Genesis' first electric vehicle (EV) – though unlike the GV60, the Electrified G80 doesn't ride on a dedicated electric-only platform, instead being based on the regular, combustion-powered G80 introduced in 2020.

Powering the electric sedan is a large lithium-ion battery pack and a pair of 136kW/350Nm electric motors split across each axle, combining to send 272kW and 700Nm to all four wheels for a 4.9-second 0-100km/h sprint time.

Genesis claims an 'estimated' maximum driving range of 500km on the more lenient NEDC test cycle – 163km down versus its natural segment rival, the updated Tesla Model S Long Range and its 663km 'estimated' figure. A 427km estimated range is claimed, according to Korean electric vehicle testing standards.

Both 400- and 800-volt DC fast charging is supported, with the maximum 350kW charging capacity enabling a 10 to 80 per cent charge in just 22 minutes – making it the Electrified G80 one of the fastest-charging electric vehicles on sale.

An onboard vehicle-to-load system allows the vehicle to power external electrical devices from its battery pack at up to 3.6kW, while a Disconnector Actuator System (DAS) allows one of the electric motors to be disconnected depending on vehicle speed and driving situation, to improve efficiency and increase range.

The standard-fit adaptive dampers feature a camera and navigation data to pre-emptively control damper stiffness based on the road ahead, while a active noise cancellation function uses four sensors and six microphones to 'cancel out' road noise.

Styling changes over the petrol-powered model on which the EV is based are minimal, with the Electrified G80 gaining a closed-off front grille (incorporating the charging port), revised lower front bumper design with chrome trim, a more aerodynamic set of 19-inch alloy wheels, and a new rear bumper sans a pair of exhaust tips.

The electric G80 also scores a solar roof, featuring a large solar panel used to capture electricity to power the battery pack and (subtly) increase driving range.

Inside, the standard G80's 14.5-inch infotainment screen and 12.3-inch instrument cluster are retained, with electric-specific tweaks including leather trim infused with natural dye, fabric accents made from recycled PET plastic, and eco-friendly 'forged wood' trim inlays created from recycled timber furniture.

Exclusive to the Electrified G80 is a Dark Green two-tone interior colour combination, plus a Matira Blue exterior hue.

The 2022 Genesis Electrified G80 will go on sale in Australia in early 2022. Local pricing and specifications will be announced closer to launch.
