2022 Honda Civic sedan revealed in first official image, Civic hatch to debut in coming months

11th-gen Civic sedan to be unveiled in full later this month, followed by the Civic hatch later in the year.

The 2022 Honda Civic sedan will make its full production debut on April 29, with its Australia-bound hatchback sibling to follow in "several months".

A sole image of the new car was released by Honda's American arm overnight, revealing the production Civic sedan will look all but identical to the Civic Prototype unveiled in November 2020, with changes limited to different alloy wheels, revised lower intake grille designs, and a marginally slimmer upper grille with additional body colouring.

While details remain thin on the ground as of writing, the Japanese brand promises the 2022 Civic sedan will be unveiled in full at 11am AEST on April 29, as part of a live-stream event on streaming platform Twitch.

Preparations for the start of sedan production at Honda's Canadian plant are "near completion", with the first examples to reach American dealers in the northern summer of 2021.

Of more interest to Australian buyers – given the 11th-generation sedan won't be offered locally – is the brand's confirmation that production of the new Civic Hatchback will follow its sedan sibling "by several months", indicating the first examples will roll off the production line no later than November 2021.

Civic hatch models bound for US showrooms will be built on American soil for the first time, namely in Indiana, as the Swindon, UK factory that previously serviced the US market will shut its doors later this year.

The Swindon facility's interaction with the Australian market is currently limited to the flagship Type R variant – which will end production in July 2021 – with regular, non-performance Civic sedan and hatch models sourced from Thailand.

It's thought standard versions of the new-generation Civic hatch bound for Australia will continue to be built in Thailand, with Type R production for our market slated to move to the aforementioned Indiana plant, in line with US-delivered models.

The 2022 Honda Civic sedan will be unveiled in full on 29 April 2021, at 11am AEST. Stay tuned to CarAdvice for all the latest.

Meanwhile, expect to hear more on the new 2022 Honda Civic hatch in the coming months, ahead of a likely Australian launch sometime in 2022 – though official timing has yet to be confirmed.
