Huawei to invest $1.3 billion in autonomous electric vehicle development
The Chinese tech giant looks to be serious about establishing itself as a major player in the automotive industry.
Huawei has announced it will invest US$1 billion (AU$1.3 billion) in electric and autonomous vehicle development over the next decade.
As previously reported by CarAdvice, the Chinese tech company and mobile phone giant has contracted a number of companies to co-develop its own vehicles, including BAIC Group, Chongqing Changan Automobile and Guangzhou Automotive.
Huawei was forced to widen the scope of its operations during 2020, following the decision of US President Donald Trump's administration to heavily sanction local exploits due to spying and national security concerns.
Alongside automotive development, billionaire founder Ren Zhengfei has also branched out into agriculture technology and healthcare during the last 12 months.
The move mirrors recent manoeuvring by Apple to pursue its own autonomous electric vehicle program.
CarAdvice has reached out to Huawei for further comment on its automotive plans. This story will be updated when more information becomes available.
