Skoda planning electric hatchback based on Volkswagen ID.3 – report

The Czech car maker is looking to develop a battery-powered hatch, according to reports out of Europe.

Skoda is planning to bring a new Volkswagen Golf-sized electric hatch to market in 2024.

As a Volkswagen Group brand, it's believed the new Skoda hatch will be based on the 'MEB' architecture which underpins the Volkswagen ID.3 and Cupra Born, according to Spanish publication motor.es.

In the ID.3, up to 150kW/310Nm is delivered to the rear axle from a single electric motor, offering a range between 330 and 550 kilometres on a single charge under the WLTP standard, depending on the variant.

Illustrator Tobias Buttner produced a rendering of what the fully-electric Skoda hatch could look like (top).

Volkswagen Group has been aggressively pursuing the development of electric vehicles (EVs) in recent years. In March 2021, CEO Herbert Diess announced the car giant would base at least 80 per cent of its models on its next-generation electric platform by 2030, which is expected to replace the MEB platform beginning in 2025.

Locally, the car maker has been a vocal critic of the Australian Government's lackadaisical emissions laws, which the company says is undermining its ability to secure the latest EVs for Aussie buyers.
