An American-sized pick-up for the price of a HiLux? New images hint at GWM's future plans.

GWM could be about to announce plans to enter the full-size ute segment to compete with the likes of the Ford F-150, Ram 1500, and Chevrolet Silverado.

While details of the ute have yet to be announced, it's understood the model is on Australia's wish list, with local representatives expressing their desire to compete against the American pick-ups as far back as 2017.

According to some Chinese media outlets, the new pick-up will be launched at the Shanghai motor show later in April 2021, and is expected to be fitted with a 3.0-litre engine offering 260kW and 750Nm, sending power to all four wheels through a nine-speed automatic transmission.

The engine's cylinder count is unclear – though six is the most likely option, given its displacement – as is whether it will accept China-friendly petrol or Australia's preferred diesel fuel.

If GWM follows the same recipe as its other products, pricing for the new model could undercut pick-ups from Ram and Chevrolet, and steal sales away from HiLux and Ranger utes – currently the top two most popular vehicles on sale in Australia.

The popularity of Chinese vehicles has surged in recent months, increasing by nearly 165 per cent compared with the same time in 2020, and overtaking sales of German and US models in the first quarter of 2021.
