Mercedes-AMG has confirmed its high-performance plug-in system self-charges while sliding.

Mercedes-AMG hybrid engineer, Jochen Schmitz explains the importance of conserving energy – with drifting a key method.

"We use the electric system to slow down or take the load out of the ICE, putting it in the battery – then when the slippery condition is over the ICE is already on full load and you can accelerate much faster much faster and while you're drifting you able to re-charge the battery." says Mr Schmitz.

Enabling it to drift, the nine-speed AMG automatic transmission and 4Matic+ variable all-wheel-drive system has the ability to be decoupled for rear-drive only. This gives AMG engineers the opportunity to introduce a drift mode.

The intention of recuperating energy is to presumably deploy it again once the car reaches a straight, or to 'slingshot' it out of the corner.

The flagship AMG GT 4-Door, set to be badged '73', will produce an impressive 600kW of power and 1000Nm of torque. The new system packs a two-speed transmission, electronically-controlled limited-slip differential on the rear axle, and a battery that slots in underneath the boot floor.

What's more, it will centre around the regular Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S’s M177 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 with AMG’s latest ‘P3’ E-Performance plug-in hybrid powertrain.

Providing an optimal weight distribution, the powerful electric motor can punch out as much as 150kW/320Nm for up to 10 seconds. AMG claims this will assist the big liftback with a sub-3.0 second sprint to 100km/h. Top speed is yet to be confirmed, however, it's believed to be in excess of 330km/h.

A 6.1kWh lithium-ion battery feeds current to the electric motor – drawing on technology developed by the Mercedes-AMG F1 team and will provide the vehicle with a limited pure-electric range at speeds up to 140km/h.

The battery itself boasts a power density of 17.kW/kg and weighs in at 89kg. A new cooling system along with a 150kW burst of power, being the main contributor for the hybrid systems continuous ability to recharge. In total, 70kW of power can be feed to the system continuously.

Thanks to its chiller in the advanced cooling system, the battery can deploy its energy quicker and recharge a lot quicker than other hybrids.

The 2021 Mercedes-AMG GT 73 will be unveiled before the end of the year, with local pricing to likely be on par with the Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid – approximately over $420,000.
