2022 Ford Ranger caught testing on NSW roads

The 2022 Ford Ranger is another step closer to showrooms, with four prototypes spotted testing on the roads near Nowra on the NSW south coast.

Images published on Facebook over the weekend confirmed numerous sightings in the area since last Friday.

It appears the Melbourne-based engineering team stopped for lunch in a car park across the road from fast food outlet KFC.

Although the vehicles are heavily disguised in camouflage wraps, the test team seem to be scrambling to fit car covers on the vehicles during the stop.

There is little to give away the final appearance of the 2022 Ford Ranger but our renderings from a year ago, based on a spy photo of a design study published by Wheels magazine, appear to be close to the money.

The biggest change to the final design we can see is the vertically-stacked headlight cluster, similar to the new Ford F-150 in the US.

The design study from two years ago appeared to have headlight lenses at the bottom of the C-shaped light clusters.

The good news is we won't have to wait long to see the new Ford Ranger. Drive understands it is due to be unveiled in the second half of this year ahead of its showroom arrival in early 2022.

Also, in case you're wondering, the next Volkswagen Amarok (illustrated by VW below) – which will be built by Ford and based on the next Ranger – is due to follow its donor vehicle by about 18 months, so it's a bit early for public road prototypes of that vehicle.

In the meantime, if you spot this fleet of Ford prototypes (or another convoy like it), feel free to send us some photos – but please don't use your phone while driving to capture the images, or do anything likely to harm you or anyone else.

If the vehicles are parked in a public space like this car park, they're fair game for photos.

If the vehicles are locked away out of public view on private property, best to leave them alone unless you want Johnny Law knocking on your door.
