2021 Toyota Kluger due in Australia in June, hybrid inbound

The 2021 Toyota Kluger seven-seat SUV will arrive in Australia by the middle of the year, with hybrid power to be offered for the first time.

Toyota Australia has confirmed the new-generation Kluger will go on sale locally in June, just slotting into the first-half 2021 arrival timing announced in May 2020.

While full pricing and specifications have yet to be confirmed, it's understood  greater levels of standard technology and safety features will see the new Kluger hit with a substantial price rise over the outgoing, seven-year-old model, priced from $44,850 to $68,574 before on-road costs.

Two engine options will be available, led on price by a 218kW 3.5-litre naturally-aspirated petrol V6, paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission driving the front or all wheels.

Headlining the line-up will be a new fuel-sipping hybrid variant, mating a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with two electric motors and a CVT automatic for 179kW and standard all-wheel drive.

On Europe's strict WLTP test cycle, combined fuel economy for the hybrid is claimed at 6.6L/100km – though an Australian consumption claim has yet to be announced.

Government documents confirm at least two variants will be offered. Entry-level Kluger models will feature 18-inch alloy wheels, while high-grade variants – including the flagship Grande – will offer 20-inch alloy wheels and a panoramic sunroof.

Available features on European models include a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and satellite navigation (though UK models make do with a 7.0-inch screen), a 10.1-inch head-up display, 7.0-inch digital instrument display and projector LED headlights.

Other standard inclusions on range-topping models include tri-zone climate control, perforated leather upholstery, front and rear seat heating, an 11-speaker JBL sound system, hands-free power tailgate and wireless phone charging.

A full suite of active safety technologies are available, including autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection and support for intersections, all-speed adaptive cruise control, lane-centring assist, traffic-sign recognition, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic high beams.
