All-electric Porsche Taycan becomes Australia’s best-selling luxury sedan

The electric 2021 Porsche Taycan is now Australia’s best-selling large luxury sedan, according to the latest sales figures from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries.

The ‘Large Car over $70,000’ category has long been dominated by the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and BMW 5 Series, with the top spot almost exclusively held between the two of them every month since 2000.

However, during March 2021 Porsche reported 161 examples of the Taycan as sold, compared to just 155 examples of the E-Class and 31 examples of the 5 Series.

This appears to be the first time an electric vehicle has ever topped any segment in the monthly VFACTS industry report – although it must be noted, Tesla, which is understood to be the country's largest distributor of electric vehicles, does not report its sales data to the survey.

Regardless, it remains to be seen if these impressive figures demonstrate genuine and consistent market demand, or rather represent a backfill of orders for a low-volume car that took around 18 months to arrive locally.

The Taycan – which only began appearing in Australian showrooms last month, despite launching internationally in late 2019 – is offered in three guises: the entry-level 4S, mid-spec Turbo, and range-topping Turbo S.

Two battery sizes are also on offer, and, in flagship form, the 2140kg all-wheel-drive vehicle produces a mammoth 560kW/1050Nm from its dual motors. This allows the 0-100km/h sprint to be completed in a claimed 2.8 seconds, however real-world testing has seen that figure drop as low as 2.4 seconds.

In entry-level guise, the 2021 Porsche Taycan is priced from $190,400 before on-road costs in Australia. The Turbo S starts at $338,500 plus on-road costs.
