Australian pricing and specification details of the 2021 Volkswagen Caddy range have been announced.

On sale in July, the fifth-generation Caddy rides on Volkswagen's now-ubiquitous MQB modular architecture, and brings with it efficient Euro 6 diesel engines, modern interior technologies and advanced driver assistance features (a total of 17) derived from the brand's latest passenger cars and SUVs.

Seven model variants will be offered Down Under, covering four Cargo vans, two people movers and one California camper.

Two wheelbase lengths will be available. The shorter SWB layout – available only on the two entry-level van models – measures 2755mm long, underneath a 4500mm body (92mm longer than the outgoing model).

Caddy Maxi models – optional on the van, and standard on the people mover and California – measure 4853mm long overall, with a 2970mm wheelbase.

Meanwhile, two engine choices will be available across the line-up (though some options are limited to certain variants): TDI280 and TDI320.

TDI280 models feature a 75kW/280Nm 2.0-litre turbo diesel four-cylinder paired to a six-speed manual transmission, while TDI320 variants score a 90kW/320Nm 2.0-litre turbo diesel four-cylinder mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch (DSG) automatic.

All models are front-wheel drive.

For more details on pricing and standard equipment for each body style, see the sub-headings below. A full breakdown of pricing can be found at the bottom of the story.

2021 Volkswagen Caddy Cargo van price and specs

Four variants of the Volkswagen Caddy Cargo van will be offered, across two wheelbase lengths (SWB and Maxi, as above) and two engine choices (TDI280 and TDI320).

SWB models – priced from $34,990 and $37,990 before on-road costs in TDI280 and TDI320 guises respectively – offer 3.1 cubic metres of cargo space and 1797mm of load length, can support a Euro pallet between the rear wheels.

Meanwhile, the Caddy Cargo Maxi features 3.7 metres of cargo space and a 2150mm maximum load length, can fit two Euro pallets in its load area, and features dual sliding doors that open 135mm wider than those of its predecessor.

Standard equipment across the Caddy Cargo range includes automatic H7 headlights with daytime-running lights, rear combination tail-lights, an 8.25-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, cloth seats, LED interior lights, front and rear cabin 12-volt sockets, a driver display between the analog gauges, and two USB-C ports.

There's also separate central locking zones for the cabin and cargo area and rear wing doors with windows, plus safety features including autonomous emergency braking, driver attention monitoring, reversing camera, rear parking sensors, and manual cruise control with a speed limiter.

Caddy Cargo SWB models feature a single sliding door on the passenger side, while Maxi models add the aforementioned dual sliding doors.

At set of 16-inch steel wheels are standard on the SWB, with 16-inch 'Vienna' or 17-inch 'Barahona' alloy wheels available as cost option. The Maxi features 17-inch steel wheels as standard, with the 17-inch 'Barahona' alloy design offered as an option.

Other options across the Caddy Cargo line-up include a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, 10.0-inch infotainment touchscreen, black leatherette upholstery, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go (with lane-centring assist, enabling semi-autonomous driving on freeways), blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and more.

Both share the uprated TDI320 engine and the longer Maxi body style. A total of 1213 litres of boot space is on offer with all rows – comprising two seats up front, three in the second row, and two in the rear – in place, expanding to 2556 litres with all bar the front row of seats removed, with measurements taken to the top of the seatbacks.

Standard equipment on the entry-level grade includes removable second and third rows, child-seat anchor and top tether points on all seats (bar the driver's), an 8.25-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 17-inch steel wheels, H7 halogen headlights, cloth seat upholstery, power-adjustable heated side mirrors, power windows, a multi-function display between the analog gauges, and a manually-dimmable rear-view mirror.

Stepping up to the Life grade adds automatic headlights, 17-inch 'Barahona' alloy wheels, rear privacy glass, black roof rails, 'Trialog' cloth trim, a digital instrument cluster, push-button start, power-folding heated side mirrors, dual-zone automatic climate control and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror.

It also adds adaptive cruise control (with stop-and-go on DSG models), Travel Assist (combining adaptive cruise control and lane-centring assist for semi-autonomous driving on motorways), semi-autonomous park assist, front and rear parking sensors and a seat-occupied recognition system.

Options include 17- or 18-inch alloy wheels, along with a wide colour palette including Candy White, Cherry Red, Reflex Silver, Mojave Beige, Costa Azul, Golden Green, Fortana Red, Indium Grey, Copper Bronze, Starlight Blue and Deep Black.

2021 Volkswagen Caddy California price and specs

The new Volkswagen Caddy will be available in California camper guise for the first time, following the introduction of the previous-generation Caddy Beach in recent years.

Priced from $54,990 before on-road costs, the Caddy California will be available solely in long-wheelbase Maxi guise, powered by the TDI320 engine and a seven-speed DSG automatic.

Standard equipment includes 17-inch black 'Colombo' alloy wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, a digital instrument cluster, push-button start, heat-insulating side windows, light-absorbing rear side glass, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, lane-keep assist, lane-centring assist, park assist, front and rear parking sensors, Emergency Assist, and Travel Assist, the lattermost enabling semi-autonomous driving on motorways.

California-specific features include a foldable bed, storage bags for the side windows, darkening covers (if the panoramic sunroof is optioned), dimmable LED cabin lights, LED tailgate lights, two ventilation grids, integrated fly screens, a foldable table and two chairs.

All Volkswagen vehicles come standard with a five-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty and annual capped-price services, with three-year and five-year pre-paid service packs also available.
