2021 Hyundai Kona Electric price and specs

The 2021 Hyundai Kona Electric small SUV has undergone a mid-life facelift for the new year.

On sale now, the updated Kona Electric follows its petrol-powered Kona counterpart into Hyundai showrooms with a new look, including a restyled, closed-off front end, body-coloured wheel-arches, and a new 17-inch alloy wheel design.

Inside, buyers will find a revised cabin, headlined by a standard-fit 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen and the addition of a fully-digital instrument cluster. However, the new technology comes at a cost, with price rises of up to $1260.

Two variants will be offered locally, as before – Elite and Highlander – both sharing the same long-range electric powertrain carried over from the pre-facelift Kona EV introduced locally in 2019.

Driving the front wheels is a 150kW/395Nm electric motor – enabling a 0-100km/h sprint time likely similar to the outgoing model's 7.6 seconds – hooked up to a 64kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

Maximum driving range is rated at 484 kilometres on Europe's stricter WLTP test cycle – up from the original 2019 model's 449km claim, thanks to new 'eco' tyres and an array of chassis improvements.

Hyundai claims the battery can be recharged from 10 to 80 per cent in 47 minutes (down seven minutes) on a 100kW DC fast-charger, or 64 minutes on a 50kW unit (down 11 minutes). A 10 to 100 per cent charge on a 7.2kW AC wall-box can be achieved in nine hours and 15 minutes (down 20 minutes).

Opening the local Kona Electric range is the Elite, priced from $62,000 before on-road costs – up $1260 – or around $66,000 to $67,500 drive-away, depending on state.

Standard equipment includes 17-inch alloy wheels with Michelin Primacy tyres and a tyre repair kit, a 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen with wired Apple CarPlay, wired Android Auto, satellite navigation and DAB+ digital radio, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, eight-speaker Harman/Kardon premium sound system, and wireless phone charging.

There's also automatic halogen projector headlights, LED daytime-running lights, leather seat trim, manually-adjustable front seats, keyless entry, push-button start, remote start (from the key fob), single-zone climate control, solar control glass, rear privacy glass, an electronic parking brake, rain-sensing wipers, tyre pressure monitoring and roof rails.

Standard safety features include autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, lane-keep assist, lane-following assist, driver attention monitoring, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert – the latter pair capable of detecting and braking for obstacles.

Other standard driver assistance technologies include Safe Exit Warning and Rear Occupant Alert, plus six airbags.

Four drive modes are on offer – Eco, Eco+, Normal and Sport – with the level of regenerative braking controlled via paddles on the back of steering wheel.

All models offer 332 litres of boot space with the rear seats in place, or 1114 litres with the second row folded, with practicality aided by a 60:40 split-folding second row and a luggage net.

Sitting atop the range is the Kona Electric Highlander, priced from $66,000 before on-road costs (up $710), or around $70,000 to $71,500 drive-away.

It adds LED headlights, indicators and tail-lights, heated and ventilated front seats, heated outboard rear seats, 10-way power-adjustable driver's seat, eight-way power-adjustable passenger seat, a glass sunroof, head-up display, high-beam assist and front parking sensors.

Highlander models also score a heated steering wheel, electro-chromatic rear-view mirror, satin chrome lower front bumper trim and ambient LED cabin lighting, plus the option of a Phantom Black or Atlas White contrast roof – though opting for either deletes the sunroof.

Surfy Blue, Phantom Black, 'Dive in Jeju', Galactic Grey, Atlas White, Pulse Red and Dark Knight (grey) exterior colours are available.

All hues bar Dive in Jeju and Atlas White command a $595 premium, while all colours bar Pulse Red can be had with black and grey leather trim (replacing black) for an extra $295.

The entire Kona Electric range is bundled as standard with a five-year/unlimited-kilometre vehicle warranty, along with an eight-year battery warranty.
