Genesis X Concept unveiled, previews luxury brand’s future

Genesis has shown its latest concept car – a big, sleek GT coupe, which shares a resemblance to the upcoming G90 sedan.

The covers have come off the Genesis X Concept, revealing an all-electric Gran Tourer (GT) coupe that provides a glimpse at the company's direction.

Genesis has revealed the X Concept alongside a 'digital motor show' website, providing a virtual space for people to view the battery-powered concept in its Lencois Blue paint.

Design features include a 'slide-to-open' charging door, cameras in lieu of side mirrors, and a three-dimensional 'G-Matrix' front grille. Twin parallel lines are echoed throughout the exterior of the sleek coupe – an amplification of the design language seen on Genesis' most recent production models.

There are plenty of familial similarities with the Essentia electric coupe concept of 2018, too.

Inside, the X Concept has a driver-centric sweeping dashboard, ambient lighting, and four-point racing harnesses, with much of the interior created from leftover pieces of leather. Click on any of the images to access the photo gallery.

While concept cars are often a showcase for emerging technology, Genesis has not provided any technical details on the car – perhaps signalling that this is closer to reality than a mere exercise in design.

What we are possibly seeing is a precursor to the upcoming flagship, the Genesis G90 sedan, which has been spotted in heavy camouflage in recent months as it undergoes final testing. The concept may also be Genesis taking the temperature to see if there's an appetite for a big, sleek, two-door GT.

Maybe the Korean company has provided a hint in the name: the company says the letter 'X' symbolises a "hidden hero".

It's worth noting the Essentia concept was suggested to be bound for production in 2019, though it's unclear whether the coronavirus pandemic and/or other factors have influenced the coupe's production future.

"The Genesis X Concept can be described as the ultimate vision of Athletic Elegance, the inherent design language of Genesis," said SangYup Lee, Head of Global Design for Genesis.

"The signature Two Lines theme and sustainable luxury will be blueprints for the futuristic designs and state-of-the-art technologies that Genesis seeks to adopt in its future models."
