As if the yet-to-be-released BMW 1 Series M Coupe isn't already going to whet the appetites of every car nut out there, BMW is apparently considering a light-weight 'CSL' version.

Although it is just a rumour at this stage, American automotive publication Autoblog has been in touch with a BMW insider who has hinted the idea of a CSL version. According to the report, BMW has told Autoblog that the realisation of a CSL version will depend on the interest and sales of the initial M Coupe model.

If the new M Coupe model does do well, which, judging by sky-high anticipation levels, a CSL or GTS variant may very well be in the mix for the future. This would be a lighter, sharper and overall quicker version that could feature enhancements such as carbon fibre panels, tweaked engine performance and the inclusion of a race-ready interior. It's also likely the CSL will be made in strictly limited numbers, like the already-exclusive 2700 units planned for the normal M version.

The normal road-going version of BMW 1 Series M Coupe will be officially unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show in January. It's expected to go on sale some time towards the end of 2011/beginning of 2012.
