2021 Mercedes-Benz EQS interior unveiled

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz EQS's interior has been revealed, ahead of its full debut rumoured for 15 April.

The dedicated all-electric companion to the combustion-powered S-Class limousine, the new EQS will debut an all-new interior for Mercedes-Benz, dominated by what the brand calls the MBUX Hyperscreen.

Unveiled in January 2021, the optional Hyperscreen measures 141cm edge to edge, and comprises a digital driver instrument cluster, central infotainment touchscreen and another touchscreen for the passenger.

Powering the dashboard is 24 gigabytes of RAM, eight CPU cores and 46.4GB/s of memory bandwidth, all joined by a "multi-function" camera and a light sensor, the latter used to vary the screen brightness based on the lighting conditions.

The central screen runs the latest version of Mercedes-Benz's MBUX infotainment system, which employs artificial intelligence to tailor the contents of the home screen based on user behaviour and location, and to suggest over 20 vehicle functions to the driver based on past behaviour and saved actions.

The German brand claims the EQS's interior "appeals to the first four [senses] in many ways."

Sight is handled via the all-electric flagship's interior and exterior styling details, from its cab-forward "one-bow" exterior proportions – which enable a drag coefficient "starting with" 0.20Cd – to the minimalist, button-less design of the Hyperscreen and door panels that "[borrow] from the interior design of modern living spaces."

Sound is covered primarily by two 'soundscapes', Silver Waves and Vivid Flux, which produce distinct sounds when unlocking or locking the vehicle, entering or existing, or when on the move, in order to fill the acoustic 'gap' left by the elimination of a six- or eight-cylinder combustion engine.

A HEPA cabin filter and an active fragrancing package – including a new 'No.6 Mood Linen' fragrance, unique to the EQS – cater to olfactory senses (smell), while 10-mode massaging seats, haptic feedback in the Hyperscreen's displays and Neotex nubuck leather/neoprene upholstery appeal to haptic perception (sense of touch).

Available features include a series of Energizing Comfort massage and cabin ambience systems, an augmented-reality head-up display, and a 710-watt, 15-speaker Burmester sound system.

Eight interior colour combinations are available, plus a choice of Comfort or Sport seat designs, and an array of trim inlay options from open-pore wood to piano black.

It's worth noting the MBUX Hyperscreen dashboard isn't standard across the European EQS range, with 'entry-level' models featuring a dual-screen interior design similar to that of the S-Class, with a freestanding digital instrument cluster and a portrait central touchscreen (pictured below in AMG Line guise).
