Petition to name Nurburgring corner after Sabine Schmitz gains traction

Support for 'Sabine's Corner' at the famous German circuit is growing online, following the racer's death this month.

Following the death of racing driver and television personality Sabine Schmitz earlier this month, a petition has emerged online calling for a corner to be named after her at Nurburgring Nordschleife.

Schmitz, who passed away aged 51 following a long battle with cancer, was affectionately known as the 'Queen of the Nurburgring' – the racing circuit where she spent most of her life and career.

Dale Lomas, who runs the blog bridgetogantry.com – referring to the points where amateur racers time themselves on the northern loop of the Nurburgring, called the Nordschleife – set up the petition to gather support for a corner named after Schmitz.

In 1996, Schmitz was the first woman to win the Nurburgring 24 Hours endurance race, and followed it up with a second win the following year.

But she was arguably best-known for her appearances on British TV show Top Gear, as well as driving BMW 'Ring Taxis' for decades, taking thousands of tourist for a drive around the famous German circuit at full song.

At the time of writing, the signed petition was just shy of its 50,000 target. A statement from Nurburgring management on social media confirmed it would honour Schmitz in some way, but cautioned it will only happen after her friends and family have been properly consulted in due course.

If you would like to pledge your support, you can find the petition by clicking here.
