2021 Toyota GR 86 could be just weeks away, as Subaru confirms joint announcement

A joint announcement will be coming next month from Toyota and Subaru, with the GR 86 expected to be launched.

Toyota and Subaru have confirmed plans for a joint announcement on 5 April 2021, suggesting the all-new GR 86 sports car could be closer to launch than previously thought.

Teasing the upcoming event, an image appears to show the badges of both a Toyota GR 86 and a Subaru BRZ, with the words "Let's make ever-better cars together!"

While it's yet to be confirmed the upcoming media event will feature the wildly-popular coupe's reveal, CarAdvice understands this is highly likely.

However, the timing is at odds with earlier reports suggesting the Toyota GR 86 unveiling had been postponed to further differentiate the model from its Subaru twin.

According to a statement from Toyota, Gazoo Racing president Koji Sato will take part in the upcoming event, all but confirming earlier reports the new-generation 86 would feature the brand's performance-focused 'GR' badging. This will place the car in elite company, alongside the GR Supra and GR Yaris in Australia.

Spokespeople for both brands in Australia were unable to comment or provide further details for the upcoming announcement, however confirmed more information would be shared locally in the coming weeks.

The twin-under-the-skin Subaru BRZ (shown below) was revealed in November 2020, with a 2.4-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder boxer engine delivering 170kW/249Nm to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual transmission or six-speed torque-converter automatic.

The upcoming Toyota GR 86 will feature a few styling tweaks, however is likely to have the same – or very similar – specifications.
