2022 Alpina B8 Gran Coupe: Tuned BMW 8 Series revealed

The 2022 Alpina B8 Gran Coupe – a tuned variant of the BMW 8 Series sedan – has been revealed, with powerful V8 performance, upgraded suspension, tweaked styling, and a reworked cabin.

Power comes from BMW’s original 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8, uprated to send 457kW/800Nm to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Alpina claims this set-up allows the B8 to accelerate from 0-100km/h in 3.4 seconds, on the way to a top speed of 324km/h.

For reference, the 'standard' BMW M850i xDrive – on which the B8 is based – extracts 390kW/750Nm from a version of the same engine, completing the 0-100km/h sprint in a claimed 3.7 seconds on the way to a top speed of 244km/h.

A set of trademark 20-spoke, 21-inch alloy wheels fill the arches, hiding 396mm front and 399mm rear Brembo four-piston brakes.

They're joined under the skin by a bespoke Alpina-developed suspension tune, allowing for improved handling and increased comfort during the daily commute.

The sedan – which measures 4843mm from nose to tail – also features a rear-wheel steering system for improved manoeuvrability.

Externally, the beefed-up Gran Coupe gains larger front air intakes (though still integrated into a bumper largely shared with the M850i), a rear lip spoiler, sportier rear diffuser, and Alpina badging.

B8 buyers will have the choice of Alpina Green and Alpine Blue exclusive paint hues, alongside the standard range of BMW-designed exterior colours.

Inside, the cabin is trimmed in bespoke leather upholstery, while Alpina logos crown the steering wheel and illuminated door sills.

The 2021 Alpina B8 Gran Coupe will start from US$140,895 (AU$190,000) when it arrives in US showrooms later this year – around US$32,000 (AU$42,000) more than a BMW M850i xDrive Gran Coupe, and US$10,000 (AU$13,000) more than a flagship BMW M8 Gran Coupe.
