First up, the 4MOTION provides constant all-wheel drive whilst the body is raised by 30mm, so it can certainly climb across rough terrain.
If the Rockton ride height doesn't quite hurdle any rocks or logs you throw at it it's also got plenty of bash-plate protection underneath, protecting the petrol tank and vital engine and gearbox components; so you can scrape over anything else.
The Rockton also gets reinforced 16 inch steel wheels with all-terrain tyres fitted for that extra ruggedness.
Inside the car has been given just as much 'great outdoors' attention. In the back there's two seats with their own centre console as well as a fold-out table that pops up from the floor, perfect for planning your next espionage, or top fishing destination.
Protecting the occupants from any tents you throw into the rear compartment is a solid steel mesh cage separating the cabin. It also provides plenty of space for luggage... or military accessories.
The Volkswagen Rockton comes in two engine guises, both turbo diesel. One providing 104kW of power or an optional engine outputting 134kW, both backed up by a manual transmission.
Volkswagen is selling the Rockton in Europe with prices starting at EUR34,545 (around AU$46,680). No word yet as to whether it will go on sale here in Australia.
