2022 Toyota GR 86 delayed to improve performance over Subaru BRZ – report

Rumours out of Japan suggest the upcoming GR 86 will deliver better performance compared to its BRZ twin.

The 2022 Toyota GR 86 may be delayed due to similarities with the Subaru BRZ.

The new-generation GR 86 was co-developed with Subaru and will be made on the same production line as the BRZ, but a new report suggests Toyota President Akio Toyoda wants the 86 to be noticeably different in the way it drives.

Japan's Best Car Web reports the Toyota boss told the development team: "Aim to differentiate performance from the BRZ."

It's thought the GR 86 will see a change in gearing to improve acceleration, as well as a revised tune of the 2.4-litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder 'boxer' engine – potentially unlocking more performance from the 170kW/249Nm expected in the Subaru BRZ.

Earlier reports suggested both the BRZ and GR 86 would arrive into dealerships by the end of 2021, though it's possible it could be 2022 before we see the next generation Toyota coupe.

In January 2021, CarAdvice unearthed patent drawings of the Toyota's front spoiler design, providing the first glimpse of how the GR 86 will differentiate itself visually from its Subaru twin.
