2021 Volkswagen Golf Wagon price and specs: Australian launch in July for tech-laden small wagon

Volkswagen's eighth-gen load-lugger will launch in July with more tech, a new transmission and evolutionary styling – but with price rises to match.

  • Mk8 wagon here in July with a choice of two new variants
  • High-tech cabin, new gearbox headline upgrades for buyers
  • Price rises of up to $4960 versus 2020's two most affordable models

Australian pricing and specification details for the 2021 Volkswagen Golf Wagon have been announced, ahead of its local arrival in July.

The more practical, long-roof sibling to the eighth-generation Volkswagen Golf hatch – which arrives in May – the new Golf wagon brings an evolutionary exterior design, an overhauled cabin, new technology and a new automatic transmission.

However, the changes come at a cost, with price rises of up to $4960 over the outgoing Mk7.5 model.

Volkswagen Australia will offer two variants at launch – the 'base' Golf Wagon, and pricier Golf Wagon Life – with each matching the equivalent hatch on standard equipment and engine specifications.

The new-generation, high-performance Golf R Wagon is slated to arrive in Australia in early 2022, likely alongside its hatchback sibling due around the same time.

Powering the base and Life models is a carry-over 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, sending 110kW and 250Nm to the front wheels.

Crucially for many buyers, the Mk7.5's seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission has been swapped for a conventional eight-speed torque-converter automatic designed by Japanese firm Aisin.

Combined fuel consumption is claimed at 5.9 litres per 100 kilometres – up 0.3L/100km over its predecessor.

Opening the range is the Golf Wagon (no badge), priced from $33,550 before on-road costs with a standard-fit automatic (no manual gearbox is available).

Standard equipment mirrors that of the 'base' Golf hatch, including an 8.25-inch infotainment touchscreen with wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a reversing camera, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, tri-zone automatic climate control, cloth seats, 16-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, LED tail-lights and four USB-C ports.

There's also black roof rails and a rear centre armrest with a 'ski port' pass-through, front and rear parking sensors, automatic parking, a tyre pressure loss indicator, an electric parking brake, and independent rear suspension.

The 611-litre boot is shared across the Golf Wagon range, increasing to 1642 litres with the rear seats folded – versus 381 and 1237-litre capacities in the hatch with the second row in place and folded down respectively.

Standard driver assistance technologies from the base grade up include low- and high-speed autonomous emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian and cyclist detection and support for intersections, low-speed reverse AEB, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and driver fatigue detection.

The adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist systems combine to form Travel Assist, a semi-autonomous function allowing the Golf to accelerate, brake and centre itself within its lane at motorway speeds.

There's also multi-collision braking, a proactive occupant protection system (which unlocks doors and closes windows prior to a crash) and eight airbags.

Stepping up to the Golf Wagon Life, priced from $36,250 before on-road costs, adds a 10-inch infotainment touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto and satellite navigation, a configurable 'Digital Cockpit Pro' digital instrument cluster, 10-colour ambient cabin lighting, wireless phone charging, and 17-inch 'Ventura' alloy wheels.

It also gains comfort front cloth seats with lumbar adjustment, keyless entry, push-button start, power-folding exterior mirrors, a power-operated hands-free tailgate, puddle light projection, chrome roof rails, a luggage net, a side exit warning system, and Emergency Assist (which safely brings the vehicle to a halt if the car detects the driver is incapacitated).

Life wagon buyers can option one of two optional packages, both shared with the hatch: Sound & Vision (for $1500) and Comfort & Style ($2000).

The Sound & Vision pack adds a head-up display and a 480-watt, 10-speaker Harman/Kardon premium sound system, while Comfort & Style adds 'comfort sport' front seats, microfleece cloth upholstery, 30-colour ambient cabin lighting and an electrically-operated panoramic glass sunroof.

Pure White paint is standard, with customers able to opt for Reflex Silver Metallic, Dolphin Grey Metallic, Atlantic Blue Metallic or Deep Black Pearlescent for an additional $600, or Pomelo Yellow Premium Metallic at a $900 cost premium.

The 2021 Volkswagen Golf Wagon will go on sale in Australia in July.
