2022 Volkswagen Polo and T-Roc facelifts: Australian launches due in 2022, including T-Roc R – UPDATE

Updated city car and small SUV here in the second half of next year, with updated styling and new variants.

UPDATE, 20 April 2021: The updated Volkswagen Polo could arrive much earlier than expected, as CarAdvice understands the core range will arrive in local showrooms from the first quarter of 2022 (January to March inclusive).

Our original story continues below.

25 March 2021: The 2022 Volkswagen Polo and 2022 Volkswagen T-Roc will receive mid-life facelifts in Australia in the second half of next year.

Volkswagen Australia confirmed to CarAdvice in March 2021 mid-life updates for the Polo light car and T-Roc small SUV are expected to go on sale in Australia in the second half of 2022including the flagship, high-performance R version of the latter.

That represents a 12 to 18-month wait beyond when they're slated to go on sale in Europe, in the second quarter of 2021 (April to June inclusive) for the Polo, and the fourth quarter of 2021 (October to December inclusive) for the T-Roc.

By the time the facelifted models arrive, the Polo will be approaching the start of its fifth year on sale, while the T-Roc will have been in Australian showrooms for around one and a half years – though the latter has been on sale in Europe since late 2017.

For more details on what to expect with each facelifted model, see the subtitled sections below.

2022 Volkswagen Polo facelift details

First spied testing in January 2021, the updated Volkswagen Polo is expected to concentrate its changes around its exterior, with a new front bumper with a slimmer grille and LED headlights inspired by the latest Golf hatch.

Towards the rear, wider LED tail-lights (with elements flowing into the tailgate) are expected to be joined by a restyled lower bumper and new alloy wheel designs.

While photos have yet to be captured of the facelifted city car's cabin, it's expected changes could be limited to new infotainment software and a touch-based climate control panel on higher grades.

Powertrains are expected to carry over unchanged, comprising 70kW/170Nm and 85kW/200Nm 1.0-litre turbo three-cylinders, and the 147kW/320Nm 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder in the sporty GTI.

Stay tuned to CarAdvice for all the latest on the 2022 Volkswagen Polo as its full reveal within the coming months approaches, ahead of its Australian launch next year.

2022 Volkswagen T-Roc facelift details

Less information is known about the facelifted Volkswagen T-Roc, however expect a similar number of mid-life changes to the SUV's exterior, interior and technology as the aforementioned Polo.

While prototypes have yet to be spied testing, it's almost certain there will be changes to the T-Roc's front and rear bumpers, with the potential for it to gain Golf-inspired headlights similar to those fitted to the facelifted Tiguan and upcoming Polo.

Inside – if the Tiguan is any guide – expect touch-based climate controls on flagship models and an updated infotainment system.

Like the Polo, the engine line-up is expected to undergo few changes, with the 110kW/250Nm 1.4-litre turbo petrol '110TSI' and 140kW/320Nm 2.0-litre turbo petrol '140TSI' likely to carry over.

The arrival of the facelifted T-Roc in the second half of 2022 will see a new performance-focused R model join the range, currently powered by a 221kW/400Nm 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder, paired to a seven-speed dual-clutch auto and all-wheel-drive.

In its current guise, the T-Roc R can sprint from zero to 100km/h in a claimed 4.9 seconds – though it remains to be seen whether the hot SUV gains a power or performance boost as part of the facelift, to bring it closer to the 235kW/420Nm Mk8 Golf R hatch.

The 2022 Volkswagen T-Roc is expected to be unveiled within the next six months, ahead of its local launch in the second half of 2022.
