2021 Hyundai Nexo: Local specs revealed for Australia’s first hydrogen-powered vehicle

Australia's first hydrogen fuel cell vehicle is available to both private and business customers.

  • 2021 Hyundai Nexo local specs detailed
  • Australia's first hydrogen-powered vehicle has been certified for sale
  • Hydrogen fuel-cell supplies an electric motor with 120kW/395Nm
  • Hyundai to offer all-inclusive leasing to private and business customers

Australian specification details for the 2021 Hyundai Nexo have been announced, with the Korean brand beating Toyota to the punch by offering the first hydrogen-powered vehicle for sale in Australia.

As the flagship in Hyundai's 'eco' vehicle line-up, the Nexo hydrogen fuel cell vehicle will be offered to both private and business buyers via special order and under "all-inclusive package" ownership.

However, pricing details are only available by "special order" through Hyundai Australia's internal sales department.

The ownership program is set to cost "roughly equivalent to a large SUV lease" depending on usage, ownership term and other factors. The monthly cost covers all maintenance required over the duration of the agreement.

Powering the Hyundai Nexo is a 95kW hydrogen fuel cell system with 156.5 litres of onboard hydrogen gas storage. To generate electricity, it passes the gas through a membranous structure where it is with met with regular ambient air – a process that generates electricity and powers an electric motor.

Excess electricity generated – including energy harvested during braking – is stored in a 1.56kWh lithium-ion batter.

The battery and hydrogen fuel-cell system provide enough energy for the electric motor to generate combined system outputs of 135kW and 395Nm, sent exclusively to the front wheels.

It grants the Nexo a combined driving range figure of 666km, according to Europe's WLTP test cycle. Refuelling a Nexo at either of Australia's soon-to-be four hydrogen filling stations can top the fuel cell up in as little as 5 minutes.

A single, highly-specified Nexo variant will be offered in Australia.

The sole model on offer features the brand's 'SmartSense' active safety suite as standard, which includes forward and reverse autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring and collision-avoidance, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist.

On the outside, full LED headlights, 19-inch wheels, a glass sunroof and a power-operated tailgate feature.

Inside, a 12.3-inch infotainment screen dominates the dashboard area, and features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Alongside it lies another 7.0-inch screen that's used as a digital instrument display.

Other luxuries include leather-appointed seat trim, an eight-speaker Krell premium audio system, wireless charging and 360-degree camera.

Boot space is comparable to conventionally-powered cars in the same segment, with 461 litres with the rear seats in place, extending out to 1466 lites with the second row folded. A tyre repair kit is offered in lieu of a space saving spare.

“The arrival of Nexo on Australian roads as an ADR-approved production vehicle is a landmark in Hyundai’s ongoing commitment to green mobility and to hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle technology,” said Hyundai Motor Company CEO Jun Heo.

“The hydrogen Nexo SUV is a cornerstone in the Hyundai portfolio, complementing our hybrid, plug-in hybrid and battery electric vehicles the Ioniq and Kona Electric,” Heo concluded.

The range is offered with a choice of four metallic colours paired to differing interior trims. White Cream Mica and Dusk Blue Metallic exterior shades are offered with a Stone Grey two-tone interior, whilst Cacoon Silver and Copper are linked to a dark blue interior.

The Nexo hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle is covered by a new car warranty over the duration of lease period.

The 2021 Hyundai Nexo is available to order now.
