MG Cyberster electric sports car teased once again – UPDATE

The Chinese convertible will launch from 0-100km/h in 3.0 seconds or less.

UPDATE, 2 April 2021: New images and details of the MG Cyberster have been released, ahead of its full debut at the Shanghai motor show on April 19.

It's the first time we've seen the electric sports car concept in full outside of stylised sketches, penned by the MG Advanced Design Centre in London with inspiration taken from the iconic MG B roadster of the 1960s.

Up front, round LED 'Magic Eye' headlights feature – which open like human eyes when the car is switched on – alongside an aggressive lower splitter area with integrated LED lighting elements.

Follow the 'laser belt' LED strip to the rear and you'll find a squared-off 'kamm tail' design, with Union Jack-style LED tail-lights integrated flush into the rear of the car.

"The Cyberster is a bold statement that looks strongly into MG’s future, touching on our heritage but more importantly building on our cutting edge technology and advanced design. Sports cars are the lifeblood of the MG DNA and Cyberster is a hugely exciting concept for us," said Carl Gotham, director of SAIC Design Advanced London.

MG has confirmed the concept will offer a maximum driving range of 800km, and be capable of completing the 0-100km/h sprint in under 3.0 seconds.

More details of the MG Cyberster concept will be released at the Shanghai motor show, starting April 19.

23 March 2021: The MG Cyberster electric sports car has been teased once again in a series of new sketches, ahead of an official reveal later this month.

A spokesperson for MG in Australia told CarAdvice: "The Cyberster was designed in partnership with Bilibili E-sports, and will launch in concept form on March 31."

The new images show the electric convertible’s interior and digital infotainment system for the first time, alongside a McLaren Elva and Porsche 911 Speedster inspired rear end.

The two-seater is expected to have a claimed range in excess of 800km, and launch from 0 to 100km/h in less than 3.0 seconds.

According to MG, the car's silhouette references the classic MG B from the 1960s. In an official statement, the Chinese brand said: "The exterior design of this concept embodies the balance of startling aesthetics and romanticism. The interior is deeply considered with mechanical performance and smart technology, which constructed an unprecedented super-sensory virtual space."

It is unclear if the upcoming reveal will feature a physical example of the car, or instead – like the recent MG Marvel SUV unveiling – be wholly digital.
