2021 BMW i4 revealed with 390kW and 590km range
The first images of BMW's fully-electric four-door have arrived, with the i4 promising big power and Tesla-rivalling range.
The 2022 BMW i4 has been unveiled, with BMW claiming the pure-electric four-door will deliver up to 590km of range from a single charge on the WLTP cycle.
While BMW has yet to release full details on the i4, it has revealed the model will offer a maximum of 390kW – with earlier reports suggesting this will only be available in short bursts from the performance-focused, range-topping variant, expected to be named the i4 M50.
The German car maker says that power will allow the new i4 to hit 100km/h from a standstill in "around" four seconds, likely with the help of all-wheel drive.
BMW looks to be squaring up against Tesla, with the Model 3 Long Range claiming 580km of range (WLTP) and equivalent sprint times.
It's worth noting that as the i4 is based on the petrol-powered 4 Series Gran Coupe, BMW refers to the body as a four-door coupe, with a sloping roofline delivering aerodynamic benefits – as well as styling benefits – over that of a more traditional three-box sedan.
Earlier this month, website BMW Blog corroborated a report from December 2020, stating the i4 would be offered in three variants: an entry-level eDrive35, a mid-spec eDrive40, and the aforementioned flagship, the M50.
Though the M50 will use electric motors on both axles for all-wheel-drive grip, both the eDrive35 and eDrive40 will be exclusively rear-wheel drive.
