2021 Pagani Huayra R: $4 million track-only hypercar revealed

Italian hypercar maker debuts its most extreme model yet, with a 625kW atmo V12 and a hefty price tag.

The 2021 Pagani Huayra R has been unveiled, as the Italian supercar specialist's most extreme model to date.

The spiritual successor to the Zonda R of 2009, the track-only Huayra R is pitched as a hardcore, full-fat hypercar intended to "[represent] the full expression of Pagani Automobili’s technological development".

Powering the circuit specialist is a 6.0-litre naturally-aspirated V12 engine designed from the ground-up in collaboration with Mercedes-backed race team HWA, developing 625kW (at 8250rpm) and 750Nm (from 5500-8300rpm).

Weighing just 198kg, the V12 mill, branded as the 'Pagani V12-R', can rev up to 9000rpm, and features a 200-bar direct-injection system to improve thermal efficiency and aid performance.

Drive is sent to the rear wheels through a six-speed sequential transmission, featuring a motorsport-derived clutch and a 'dog ring' design, the latter seeing the synchromeshes between gears typically found in road-going transmissions deleted to reduce shift times.

Specific acceleration or top speed figures haven't been announced by the brand, however a 0-100km/h sprint time in the two-second bracket is likely, as is a top speed beyond 320km/h.

Under the skin, the Huayra R's monocoque chassis employs a range of composite materials designed to reduce weight and improve safety on track, including Carbo-Titanium HP62-G2 and chrome-molybdenum alloy steel.

Pagani claims a dry weight of 1050kg, along with 51 per cent and 16 per cent in flexural and torsional rigidity at the rear of the car versus a road-going Huayra.

Suspension is covered by forged aluminium alloy double wishbones front and rear, paired with reworked geometry, helical springs and electronically-controlled adaptive dampers.

Filling the arches are 19-inch forged aluminium alloy wheels designed by APP Tech, wrapped in 275mm front and 325mm rear Pirelli P Zero racing slick tyres.

They hide Brembo CCM-R carbon-ceramic brakes, measuring 410mm by 38mm up front, and 390mm by 34mm at the rear, all clamped by six-piston calipers.

Matching the race-bred chassis is a hardcore aerodynamics package, featuring a deep front splitter, large front-side air intakes, rear diffuser, rear wing, roof scoop, rear centre fin and front wheel-arch vents that combine to produce 1000kg of downforce at 320km/h, across a 46/54 split front to rear.

Other performance features of note include a lightweight alloy exhaust with equal-length exhaust manifold runners designed to allow the Huayra R's V12 to "roar like a Formula One car of the past".

Owners can also fit a set of mufflers when at a race track, to reduce the car's level of noise produced to the FIA-mandated limit of 110 decibels.

Inside the Huayra R's cabin, highlights include a detachable racing steering wheel, race-inspired centre stack with buttons to control lights, brake balance, engine maps and more, a fully-digital motorsport instrument display and AP Racing adjustable race pedals.

Aiding safety is a full roll cage, an automatic fire extinguishing system, and a pair of race bucket seats with six-point harnesses, both trimmed in flame-retardant Nomex material.

Just 30 examples of the 2021 Pagani Huayra R will be built, each priced from a cool €2.6 million (AU$4 million) each... before taxes.

Buyers will have access to an 'Arte in Pista' (art on the track, in Italian) program, comprising a range of on-track driving events from individual track days to group events with other Huayra R owners in North America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
