2022 Kia Sportage to debut by July, Australian launch by end of 2021

Kia's crucial new mid-size SUV will be unveiled by mid-2021, with an Australian launch scheduled for late 2021.

The camouflage will be lifted off the 2022 Kia Sportage by the middle of 2021, the brand has confirmed, ahead of an Australian launch by the end of the year.

During the brand's recent 2021 CEO Investor Day event for company shareholders, Kia CEO Ho-Sung Song announced the next-generation Sportage mid-size SUV would launch in its home market in the second quarter of 2021 (April to June inclusive).

A global debut is expected around a similar time – aligning with reports from late 2020 suggesting an April reveal is on the cards.

It will then go on sale in Australia in the fourth quarter (October to December inclusive), Kia Australia has confirmed, with local pricing and specifications to be announced closer to launch.

First spied testing in November 2020, the new Kia Sportage is expected to share its platform with the new-generation Hyundai Tucson, and borrow its sister car's range of petrol, diesel, petrol-electric hybrid and plug-in hybrid engines – though not all options will necessarily be offered in our market.

Spy photos suggest the new Sportage will adopt a more aggressive look than its predecessor, with a bold front fascia comprising an enlarged grille and C-shaped LED daytime-running lights, prominent rear wheel arches and a full-width rear tail-light graphic.

Similar changes are expected inside, with Kia-specific versions of the Tucson's 10.25-inch instrument display and 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen expected to feature.

Stay tuned to CarAdvice as the 2022 Kia Sportage's full reveal and Australian launch near over the coming months.
