2021 MG 5 Electric wagon unveiled for Europe, Australian launch unlikely

The 2021 MG 5 Electric has been unveiled for European markets, with the zero-emissions long-roof claimed to be the "the first 100 per cent electric station wagon in the world".

However, keen-eyed readers will note that, despite being pitched as all-new, the MG 5 Electric is a rebadged version of the facelifted Roewe Ei5 sold in China, which has been on sale in its home market for a number of months.

The electric wagon's history dates back further in pre-facelift guise, in which it has been sold in the UK since late 2020, and in China under the Roewe name for a number of years.

Measuring 4544mm long, 1811mm wide and 1513mm high, all sitting on a 2665mm wheelbase, the MG 5's long-roof shape enables 578 litres of boot space with the rear seats in place, or 1456 litres with them folded.

Powering the model is a 135kW/280Nm electric motor on the front axle, paired to a lithium-ion battery (of unknown capacity) for an 8.3-second 0-100km/h sprint time and a WLTP-rated range of over 400km.

Like the Marvel R Electric revealed alongside the MG 5, a 30-minute stint on a DC fast charger will enable an 80 per cent charge. Eleven kilowatt AC charging is also available, via an onboard charging unit.

Maximum towing capacity sits at 500kg, while the roof can support 75kg, the latter suitable for a bike carrier or roof storage box.

Vehicle-to-load capabilities – allowing the MG 5's battery to power external electrical devices – are standard, while a full suite of MG Pilot assistance technologies are available.

The 2021 MG 5 Electric will go on sale in Europe in October 2021.

However, don't expect to see the electric long-roof reach Australian shores, given declining passenger car sales and a niche market for compact wagons Down Under – though the brand's local arm has yet to rule it out.
