2021 Toyota LandCruiser 200 Series prices surge beyond $150,000 as supply dries up

Toyota LandCruiser 200 Series asking prices have surged online, as Australians buy up remaining stocks of what is believed to be the last turbo diesel V8.

The recommended retail price (before on-road costs) for a Toyota LandCruiser 200 Series is between $80,996 (GX) and $131,896 (Horizon Limited Edition), however dealers and private sellers online are listing new and near-new LandCruisers for up to 55 per cent – or $63,000 more than the RRP.

In one example of a new Toyota LandCruiser in mid-grade VX trim – showing just 10 kilometres on the odometer – has an asking price of $160,000, almost $57,000 more than the RRP.

A number of examples of the highly sough-after top-of-the-range LandCruiser Sahara are listed on Carsales.com.au are priced from $174,888 to $189,000 – up to $64,000 more than the RRP.

The most expensive brand new Toyota LandCruiser found online is a limited-edition Horizon priced from $195,000, or $63,000 above the RRP.

The current generation V8-powered 200 Series LandCruiser has been in production since 2007 and is near the end of its production run, as Toyota gears up to introduce the new ‘300 Series’ model later this year.

While most details of the next-generation LandCruiser are still a closely guarded secret, there is widespread speculation it will be powered by a range of V6 engines, both turbo diesel and petrol hybrid.

If true, this will be a return to form as Toyota LandCruisers have historically powered by six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines for many years. However, these have always been inline-six configuration, not V6.

The diesel V8 has been the only engine choice for the 200 Series LandCruiser in Australia since late 2019, after the petrol V8 was removed from the lineup. The diesel engine develops 200kW @ 3600rpm and 650Nm @ 1600-2600rpm.

The same engine is used in the range of 70-Series LandCruisers, but with only one turbocharger and with commensurably lower outputs: 151kW @ 3400rpm and 430Nm @ 1200-3200rpm.

Despite Toyota stockpiling the LandCruiser 200 Series as the model neared the end of the line, the sharp increase in demand – due to Australians holidaying at home amid international travel restrictions – has almost exhausted local supply.

Toyota has told Drive demand for the LandCruiser 200 Series has "exceeded our expectations".

Toyota would not disclose how many LandCruisers 200 Series remain available in Australia, or when production is due to end.

However, car dealers have told Drive they can no longer order the vehicle from the factory and only inbound stock remains.
