Jaguar reveals new E-Type 60 Collection coupe and roadsters

Just six matching pairs have been built to celebrate E-Type's 60th birthday.

The first of six pairs of matching Jaguar E-Type 60 Collection cars has been revealed overnight by Jaguar Classic as it ramps up celebrations for the iconic sports car’s 60th birthday.

The Jaguar E-Type made its global debut on 15 March 1961 at the Geneva motor show and has since gone on to become one of the most revered cars of all time.

To celebrate, Jaguar Classic has painstakingly restored and re-engineered 12 E-Types – six coupes and six convertibles – which will be sold as matching pairs.

The cars are inspired by the original E Type coupe, registration 9600 HP and convertible (rego 77 RW) that wowed the public at Geneva, resulting in over 500 orders before the end of the motor show.

Jaguar Classic is building six coupes, inspired by the original ‘9600 HP’ E-Type. They will be finished in what Jaguar is calling ‘Flat Out Grey’ paint and trimmed in ‘Smooth Black’ leather interior, matching the original show car.

Similarly, six E-Type 60 Edition roadsters take inspiration from the original ‘77 RW’ show car, with 'Drop Everything Green' paint and a 'Suede Green' leather interior.

Those paint names are a nod to the instructions given by Jaguar boss Sir William Lyons to his two drivers in 1961. Lyons told Bob Berry to drive the Opalescent Gunmetal Grey coupe ‘flat out’ from Coventry to Geneva for the show. The following day, he instructed Norman Dewis to ‘drop everything’ and drive the British Racing Green convertible to Geneva.

Both editions come with bespoke elements such as commemorative E-Type 60 logos on the bonnet badge, fuel filler cap, and chassis plate.

The centre console of each is hand engraved by artist and designer King Nerd, depicting the drive routes of those original cars from Jaguar’s headquarters in Coventry to Geneva. Each individual engraving took over 100 hours to complete.

Under the long bonnet, Jaguar Classic has installed a 3.8-litre straight-six XK engine making 198kW. Modern upgrades include a 1961-style alloy radiator with electric cooling fan and electronic ignition. A polished stainless steel exhaust system mirrors the standard mild steel, but offers a deeper exhaust note while also increasing longevity.

But the biggest mechanical upgrade is reserved for the specifically-developed five-speed manual gearbox which features synchromesh on all gear ratios, helical cut gears and a reinforced cast aluminium casing. Jaguar Classic says this will offer greater reliability and durability.

Inside the cabin, Jaguar Classic has discreetly installed a modern infotainment system with Bluetooth connectivity and in-built satellite navigation.

The Jaguar E-Type Collection cars will only be sold as a pair: one E-Type 60 Edition coupe and one E-Type 60 Edition roadster. They will be the only Jaguar cars to ever feature the 1961-inspired bespoke colours.

Jaguar Classic Director, Dan Pink, said: "Sixty years after its unveiling at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1961, the talented team at Jaguar Classic are releasing the ultimate birthday present to the E-type: The E-type 60 Collection.

"The attention to detail demonstrates how this project has been a labour of love for our designers, engineers, craftspeople and partners."

Every car is delivered with its own tailor-made E-Type car cover and comes supplied with a period correct tool roll, and jack storage bags.

Jaguar Classic has not disclosed pricing for the E-Type Collection pairs – not that it matters, with Jaguar confirming all six pairs already sold.
