2021 Peugeot 508 plug-in hybrid due in Australia by the end of 2021

The 2021 Peugeot 508 range will double in size by the end of 2021, with the introduction of plug-in hybrid variants of the French brand's mid-size liftback and wagon.

A Peugeot Citroen Australia spokesperson confirmed to Drive the 508 plug-in hybrid (PHEV) – badged 508 Hybrid – will arrive in Australian showrooms in the second half of 2021, joining a plug-in version of the 3008 mid-size SUV also due in showrooms during the same period.

Powering the 508 Hybrid is a 133kW 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, paired with an 80kW electric motor to send a combined 165kW to the front wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission.

An 11.6kWh lithium-ion battery enables a 63km all-electric range according to Europe's WLTP test cycle, with combined fuel economy rated at 2.1L/100km.

The 220kW all-wheel-drive version of the 1.6-litre powertrain in the upcoming 3008 plug-in hybrid won't be offered with the 508, though a performance-focused, 265kW/520Nm 508 Sport Engineered model could arrive "as early as halfway through 2022", the brand told media in October 2020.

While local pricing and specifications won't be announced until closer to the vehicle's showroom arrival, it's likely the 508 Hybrid will be offered in Australia solely in flagship GT guise, mirroring the 'regular' 165kW/300Nm petrol-only 508 GT currently available Down Under.

If UK prices for the 508 GT petrol and hybrid models are a guide, the plug-in Peugeot could retail for around $60,500 before on-road costs locally in Fastback guise, and $62,500 before on-roads in Sportswagon form – around $3000 more than the equivalent petrol-only model.
