2021 Genesis GV60 electric SUV spied testing, Australian launch expected in 2021

Genesis' first electric vehicle will feature styling inspired by the 2019 Mint concept, a new spy photo reveals.

The 2021 Genesis GV60 electric SUV has been spotted testing in Korea, ahead of its Australian launch understood to be scheduled for later this year.

A single spy photo published by enthusiast site The Korean Car Blog showcases the rear three-quarter of Genesis' first electric vehicle – codenamed JW, but rumoured to be badged GV60 – wearing significantly less camouflage versus prototypes spied undergoing winter testing in recent months.

Stripping back the disguise reveals a number of visual similarities to the two-door Genesis Mint concept of 2019, with the new SUV featuring a similar rising beltline, C-pillar graphic, angular twin-bar tail-lights and a sloping rear window.

While the GV60's front end isn't visible, expect a similar twin-bar LED lighting signature to the concept, and a closed-off fascia with the Korean luxury brand's 'crest' design signature sculpted into the bodywork, as per the Mint.

Under the skin, the GV60 – what the model is expected to be called, as a final production moniker has yet to be announced – will ride on the Hyundai group's E-GMP modular electric platform, as shared with the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and upcoming Kia EV6.

In the Ioniq 5, outputs range from 125kW/350Nm to 225kW/605Nm, with WLTP-certified driving ranges of up to 480km – expect the Genesis to offer a selection of the Hyundai's powertrains.

The companies have confirmed the E-GMP architecture is capable of a 0-100km/h time of under 3.5 seconds, and a maximum range of 500km – it's possible a flagship, performance-oriented GV60 'Sport' could quote such figures.

The Ioniq 5's interior technologies are expected to inspire those of the Genesis, with spy photos suggesting a pair of circa-12.0-inch displays will be integrated into a vertical panel on the dashboard.

Given how little camouflage is worn by the latest prototype, the 2021 Genesis GV60 is expected to make its full debut in the coming months, following in the wheel tracks of the Hyundai Ioniq 5's debut in February 2021, and the Kia EV6's unveiling slated for March 2021.

Genesis Australia has previously indicated it will launch its first electric vehicle in 2021, which CarAdvice understands will be the upcoming GV60, rather than either of the electric versions of the G80 limousine and GV70 mid-size SUV spied in recent months.
