Mazda's latest CX-8 has seen two new variants introduced, with the flagship gaining second-row captain's chairs.

  • 2021 Mazda CX-8 range expands
  • Sporty Touring SP and flagship Asaki LE now offered
  • Updated infotainment system for premium variants
  • $1390 price rise for CX-8 GT
  • Priced from $39,990 plus on-road costs to $69,920 plus on-road costs

The 2021 Mazda CX-8 has been updated for the new year, and following in the footsteps of its Mazda SUV stablemates, gains a sporty new Touring SP variant.

As revealed by CarAdvice earlier this year, many of the updates added by Mazda in the Japanese market in late 2020 have make their way into Australian-delivered CX-8 models.

A new luxury flagship variant has been introduced in the CX-8 Asaki LE, which features a six-seater layout with captain's chairs for second-row occupants, as seen in the CX-9.

Buyers get a choice of a 2.5-litre non-turbo petrol four-cylinder engine producing 140kW and 252Nm, powering the front wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission in the Sport, Touring, and Touring SP models. Fuel consumption is claimed at 8.1 litres per 100 kilometres.

Also available across the range is a 2.2-litre turbo diesel four-cylinder engine offering 140kW and 450Nm, mated to a six-speed auto.

The diesel can be had in either front- or all-wheel drive, depending on the variant and option boxes ticked, with fuel consumption listed as 5.9L/100km and 6.0L/100km respectively.

The entry-level CX-8 Sport offers tri-zone climate control, 8.0-inch infotainment screen with satellite navigation, Bluetooth, and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto capability, a six-speaker audio system, reversing camera and sensors, blind-spot monitoring, auto high-beams, traffic sign recognition, lane departure warning, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian recognition, and rear cross-traffic alert.

A set of 17-inch alloy wheels come as standard, as do auto LED headlights, rain-sensing wipers, power-folding heated side mirrors, a tyre pressure monitoring system.

The CX-8 Touring adds LED fog lights, front parking sensors, keyless entry, a black leather interior with heated power front seats, USB charging for second-row passengers, one-touch walkin-in access to the third row, and, new for 2021, a set of paddle shifters.

The newest addition to the line-up, the Touring SP, gains a set of 19-inch alloy wheels, gloss black front grille and mirrors, black honeycomb pattern interior trim, black 'Maztex' synthetic leather with Grand Luxe synthetic suede and red contrast stitching, and second-row outer seat heating.

Now costing $1390 more than last year's model, the CX-8 GT gains additional exterior styling highlights, adaptive LED signature headlights and daytime-running lights, remote power tailgate, metal and wood interior trims, a choice of burgundy or black leather, power slide and tilt sunroof, wireless smartphone charger, third-row USB chargers, rear door window sunshade, and LED interior lights.

The CX-8 GT and variants above also get the latest 10.25-inch widescreen Mazda Connect infotainment system, running through a premium 10-speaker Bose audio system.

Move up to the CX-8 Asaki and buyers get a gun metallic front grille with additional exterior styling highlights, larger exhaust tailpipes, silver honeycomb pattern interior trim, Chroma Brown Nappa leather with quilting, ventilated front seats, heated steering wheel with unique stitching, 7.0-inch TFT LCD driver display, a 360-degree camera, frameless rear-view mirror, and chrome seat controls.

As mentioned earlier, the range-topping CX-8 Asaki LE gains heated and ventilated power captain's chairs for the second row, with cup holders and USB chargers. The Asaki LE also has the option of either Chroma Brown of Pure White Nappa leather with quilting.

The 2021 Mazda CX-8 range is offered with a five-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty, and is available to order now.
